How to stop being an altoholic?

People who used to be like me, what is your advice?

I can never stick to a class. I have a level 60 of almost every class on both Alliance and Horde. The result is that I never invest in any one of these characters long enough to get good at them and get gear or achievements or cosmetics or any progress at all. There’s always a reason to switch. Another class can always do whatever activity I’m currently into better or in a more fun way.

The closest I’ve ever come to sticking to one class is on my Druid. But when I’m playing Feral I wish I was just a Rogue. When I’m tanking I wish I was a Warrior or Paladin. When I’m playing balance I wish I was just a Mage. You can see where this is going.

Help! I so badly want to master a class and have an item level above 250.

They say variety is the spice of life and you like to sample it all . Getting one character max gear lvl is not for all people if you have fun being a jack of all character but a master of none i say go for it.

That’s where I stopped. I tried everything, and now I have about eight 60s, and another group that are close enough that if if want to, I can make one or more of them ready to be focused on next expansion.

It’s why I can’t be bothered with new classes, allied races, or new alts.

I level alts because this expansion is boring, has no enjoyable content for me anymore, but I still want to hang out with friends and I like the base gameplay. So alts are my life.

I wish I was one of those types that is perfectly content playing one class forever.

At one point, I deleted a bunch of max levels, but eventually ended up leveling more.

I often wonder when I play as a mage why I start hitting like a pally ,yet in the end I learn that just wouldn’t work hitting with 35dps( you learn very fast just how bad it is,dead ).

Being item level 250 will do what? Make world quests go a little faster for you? People who play just 1 character and are 250+ ilvl doesn’t mean they are a master of that class what so ever either. It will boil down to what class do you always log into first every time. Who has the most /played. I also have every class to 50-60, on both horde and alliance. I also have 50 characters on my account, and am always swapping. Item levels mean nothing to me anymore. Chasing that carrot on a stick is not fun. Next expansion do it all over again x 3 raid tears. No thanks.

At the end of the day though, I always logged into my hunter first. I always leveled my hunter to the new cap first. It is the class I enjoyed most, it is the class I have the highest /played time on, it is also the class I have the most alts of! Yes I have 11 hunters on my account. It is what I enjoy playing. I also have quite a few druids and shamans. I absolutely HATE playing priests and mages. They have almost no /played on them. I think I even boosted my horde one so I didn’t have to level a priest a second time lol.

Who even knows how the classes will feel after they are gutted and overhauled with a new talent tree system in Dragonflight though. What you hated 1 expansion you might love in another expansion.

You don’t have a problem sir. I can stick to a class but my alts are money generators and it’s boring just making 20 paladin (i have 6… i know…).

For me, it was the Maw, Torghast, and Korthia. Having to do those on 4 characters was enough to make me drop alts for good. Now I spend 95% of my time on my DH, 4% on alts farming the SHA mount, 1% misc (bank toon, alt profession for potions, armor kits, sharpening stones, oil, etc), and 1% working on my math skills.

I am glad I dropped alts when I did because having to do ZM multiple times would drive me insane!

Seek help. Nobody has to go through it alone.

Thats why we have alts. They’re our support group.

What stopped me from going from 12+ to 5 (still a lot) was the lack of time to play and emotional investment. I loved RP in game and in other forms like TTRPGs, so naturally all of my geared 60s have backstories and I’m attached to them. It’s a lot harder for me to now start a new alt because I’d rather spend time with a character I know - almost like an old friend.

Yes, I’m a bit of an odd one, I know.

If Shadowlands did not cure you from your altoholism then nothing will. Keep playing what you want and look forward to Dragonflight since it should be very alt friendly and you will be in the best position to pick and choose what to play. As far as sticking to just one, that would take a little soul searching to stop having the class envy creep into your decision making, go with what feels fun to you and challenge yourself to master it.

Your post suggests you’re missing some basic skills.

You’re just bouncing around without learning the game to any depth.

There is more to the game than hack and slash. You should learn your utility abilities.

Interrupt is a utility ability. Does little or no damage. It does however prevent damaging spells. Not only do you need to keep your DPS up, you should also keep from taking damage.

It can also be used to control the fight. Casters won’t move if they can cast. You will find situations where you want the caster to move to prevent aggro from a roaming pack (sometimes called patrols).

There is also playing smart. Range attackers with bows for example will not move if they can hit you from range. You either have to be out of range or lose line of sight. They will only move if they can’t see you or are out of range.

If you are tank, and have to fight a pack with mix of melee and range, pull the melee to the range mobs. They will be stacked and can be cleaved… this is called playing smart.

Raise your game IQ.

It would seem that the answer is right inside your own question.

You have a character that has a goal; get to a higher ilevel, get some cosmetics and some achievements. These are modest goals, stick with your guy and go get it!

There’s an old saying, jack of all trades, master of none. If you enjoy playing a given class on a given day, more power to you. You demonstrate versatility.

It might help if you try to focus on what your current class does well, rather than what it doesn’t do well compared to another classes. Try to understand the class’s strengths and how you can play to maximize it. Then, keep working to master that class.

Good luck. It is hard to stop being an altoholic, but I believe you can do it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I dunno if you necessarily have a problem at all. If you’re having fun playing a bunch of characters at once, then I think you’re already doing pretty good! Besides, if you keep playing them eventually they’ll all just creep up to that gear level you want and you probably won’t feel like you’re forcing yourself to do it.

But if you really want to ‘master’ a class (whatever that means), you probably will have to hunker down with one and kinda push yourself with it.

OP…you are fine. Its when you have several 60’s in retail and hop on 2 to 4 classic chars. That is when you may have issues. Especially when 2 of them are rerolls off dead servers. Nothing was really there to warrant the transfer costs. I only did that for a boosty rogue. THat was worth it.

No right way to enjoy a game.
