I’m new to wow RP. Most of my RP experience has been in forums and one-on-one with friends where it was more about collaborative storytelling than having that game aspect with a GM and stuff. I’ve never gotten into tabletop RP because math and stats and combat (which should be the fastest part of the story/moment) that drags on forever makes me want to throw myself into the sea. Playing on my phone while I wait for six people to argue over dice to describe in excruciating detail exactly how they stabbed someone is not my idea of fun.
But it seems like most of the people doing heavy RP are also doing this tabletop dnd stuff with it. Am I correct in that, or have I just stumbled across the wrong groups for me? How do I learn to tolerate/enjoy that stuff? XD I guess I can read or something until combat is over… Any advice? >_<

My advice: Join a guild that doesn’t use them. They’re out there!

Most folks I’ve seen that do dice don’t even have stats, but there are groups that don’t do them at all! Iirc Eldritch Enclave doesn’t use them, just freeform combat emotes after rolling a d20
You’ll just have to ask when scoping out a potential guild.
Most of the time for casual RP I don’t really see stats used. I know my guild only uses them for big guild events and we make sure to prime people on them before that happens.

Just don’t bother with it.
If someone won’t RP with you because you don’t use dice or stats, then they’re usually not worth your time.
Try Horde side. It’s not such a big thing over here. Just come hang in the Wyvern’s Tail for a bit and you won’t see a dice at all. some guilds do use them for events, so it pays to ask when you’re joining! winks

Dice are nice to induce some RNG into some situations like combat. But generally should just be a “not the outcome you hoped for” > “way better than you thought” scale range, and then also just to help guide RP. A 1 shouldn’t always be an epic fail, and a nat 20 doesn’t need to be god-mode, though that’s often how they’re taken.
That said, good and OOCly communicative RPers don’t need dice to decide how battles should go. You can certianly find folk that work well with you for that, but it can take some searching. Even in a guild, using dice is usually faster/easier.
Good luck in your search and I hope you find what you’re looking for!
Dice are essentially only there to impose chance into a question. That question being “can he/she do that?”
If you want to role play without using dice, you simply have to answer that question honestly. Can your character do the thing they’re trying to do?
The dice don’t answer the question - because when you use dice the answer is both yes and no - instead they just separate the player from the question, removing the need for the person playing the character to answer, themselves.
This has it’s uses and it’s drawbacks, like everything.

Thank you, everyone!
I think I might have just had a few bad experiences with dice mechanics that were way too involved and complicated. After poking around and asking some guild leaders, it does seem that most people use them in much simpler fashion so things are quick and more fun than anything.
I avoid fights and I RP somewhat casually, with an abundance of emotes. I’ve never used stats or dice in RP. I just kind of take a chill attitude towards it, and view RP as a way of socializing and saying hi to others in the game, and watching what’s going on.
