How to Quickly Macro Names in game

For a few reasons and purposes you may want to quickly make a macro with a tank’s name or the name of someone you want cast something like Power infusion on for a dungeon. Now while this may seem an easy enough task, sometimes you need to do it really quickly and may need it for a few in your group. You also get weird characters in names, like “Canárí” with the unusual lines over the a and the i.

This the case, does anyone know a quick way to do this somehow in game? Like is there an addon that lets you copy names so you can paste them into a macro really fast? Or is there any other way to do this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

In what circumstances do you need to hard code a name in? For most situations I can think of using mouse over or an add on like clique/healbot would do the job significantly easier.

If you talking about healing or something of the sort, then a mouseover would serve you best. With the latter being a focus macro where you set your focus to a target, and it will cause the macro to pop the ability on them. Along with you can set it to where it casts on your selected target, or yourself.

just use %t in your macro where you want your target’s name to appear.

Well, if you really want to make a macro and constantly change the name depending on who is in the party you can copy a player’s character name by right clicking their unit frame and clicking copy name while they are in your party… however.

I think you might find better results with making a focus target marcro instead and just remembering to focus the tank, or whoever, at the start of whatever content you are doing. Something like…

#showtooltip
/cast [@focus] Power Infusion

Then you just have to remember to pick a focus target at the start of each run.

EDIT: This is the macro I use on my hunter character for Misdirection as an example of a bit of a more complex setup.

#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][@focus,help,nodead][@pet,help,nodead]Misdirection

This basically will prioritize mouse over target > Focus Target > My Pet. It’s also smart and checks to see if the target is friendly/the spell can be cast on them “help” and that they are still alive “nodead”

You can end up doing a lot with macros. But, if you are really determined to use a specific name then I believe [@playernamehere] would work.

Like Byucknah said. the @focus will probably be the most useful… If you REALLY want to use their specific name though you can whisper them and press enter one more time so the cursor is in chat and SHIFT CLICK their name, it pastes their entire name into the message box and you can then hit ctrl + a (select all) and hit ctrl + c to copy the entire name and of course, paste it (ctrl + v) into your macro…

you can right click there name in chat and click copy character name
