How to pick a classic class?

Hey guys I never got to play in classic. I started playing the game when I could get a job and finally pay my own sub in lich king. So I have no fond memories of the game and how things were such as most of you guys, I can only go off of what I read about classic times and what I read is alot of negativity.

I read that basically only warriors, rogues, mages, and warlocks were dps and everything else sucked in raids. I read that most of the stuff im interested in trying and playing in classic was funneled into being a healer at 60 cus they couldnt be proper dps. How will I know whats real and whats just people complaining like normal forum dwellers do?

Try a couple of classes, and if one really seems to gel with you, stick with that one. It’s a long journey to 60, and if you’re not enjoying the class you’re playing you’ll only succeed in burning yourself out.

Do you want to pvp?

How you pick a class depends on what you want out of your character.

Please answer these questions:
Do you want to tank or heal, ever?
Do you care about topping meters?
Do you care about PvP?
Do you care about raiding?
Do you want to be melee or ranged?

It’s actually a bit tricky in vanilla era… because the best way to decide what you like is via actually playing things and trying them, but many classes/specs don’t even get their rotations until 40+ (which is already like 2+ days /played for an elite speed levler)

If you didn’t get beta or stress test, I obviously can’t recommend on the forums that you consider trying a private realm *wink wink, nudge nudge… because that would be more unethical than you wasting potentially days of time having to do so upon release. On a completely unrelated note, I hear the weather is nice NORTH of DALE, this time of year.

Beyond playing them yourself, look at videos and get a feel for how classes move and play. Or simply start with what archetypes you feel most interest you, and whittle your selection options down from there…

It’s important to note, that if you plan on anything beyond blue level gear, you’re probably only going to have time for a single main, and a single alt at most… I played/play more than most people dream of and still couldn’t manage more than a single raid geared toon, a pvp blue set/rep weapon geared alt, and a second alt that barely even hit 60 before Vanilla was ending. It’s not like retail the past few years where I’ve had anywhere between 4-8 level capped characters in LFR or better gear each tier.

no dont wanna tank or heal
no idc about topping meters i just wanna get brought mostly
yes pvp would be fun to do in downtime from raids
yes raiding is the goal for me to do end game.
either is fine with a small pref towards melee

Sounds like rogues are for you.

everyone will be a rogue though i was sorta leaning toward a feral druid or ret pally tbh :stuck_out_tongue:

You should play a Rogue or Fury Warrior, then, preferably Rogue.

They are melee.
They cannot tank or heal, so you’ll never be expected to.
They are one of the best DPS classes, so there will be no shortage of slots open to them.
They are good at PvP, especially 1v1s and world PvP.

Yes, there will be lots of rogues, but you won’t have a problem finding a raid slot if you pull your weight. There’s 40 raid slots. People won’t mind bringing a lot of rogues.

Try druid! Really fun to play with a high skill cap and a top tier PvP class. Bear tank is also really good for raids

Feral druids and retribution paladins had a very rough ride in Vanilla, both classes were broken, at some points severely so, until BC.

Check out the full Judgement on my toon… I lived through it… happily raided as a holy/prot paladin for 3 years, but I healed, and cleansed, and buffed - a lot… yes I had a Herald of Woe to smash faces, but that was like “after work fun.” There was no easy/free re-spec’ing.

There will be a lot of DPS competition in groups, if you want to be a rogue, prepare for a lot of “sorry we’re full, do you have a healer or tank?” If you play exceptionally well, you can earn a rogue raiding spot, but you’re easily replaced - everyone has a rogue alt.

Ret paladins and feral druids lived in battlegrounds in vanilla, they didn’t see the inside of Blackwing Lair or AQ40 in most cases.

Sorry it’s so bleak, just thought I’d let you know.

You might get brought as a feral for your aura and OT capability, but ret in vanilla is… really really really bad.

Bear in mind that if you roll a class capable of the non-DPS roles, you will be expected to step into those roles from time to time.

In relation to Classic, Ret. Paladins don’t exist (the same can be said about Feral Druids). Honestly, no guild worth its salt will carry someone for the sake of carrying someone (there has to be some sort of benefit to bringing you). Now, that doesn’t mean that you can’t play as either option, but being realistic, you’ll have to start off as a Holy Paladin or Resto. Druid before switching in… say… Tier 2.

If you want to raid as DPS mage warrior or huntard are your only options. Ret pally and ferals were garbage in vanilla.

Garrett, I have friends just like you, started with WoTLK and want to play Classic. My advice is this - question everything about specs.

Start with a role you want to fulfill, then research it’s approach, and seek guidance online/here.

So play one.

You are unlikely to find a spot in a super hardcore “world first” guild, but that’s fine, because those are usually terrible guilds to be in anyway.

Feral druid and ret paladin require more work to make work than a rogue would, and you’ll be tempted to just tank or heal to get groups faster. What you need to remember when you’re struggling to get groups is that all DPS struggle to get groups. It’s entirely possible to make either one work. Just be willing to use your whole toolkit and you’ll do fine.

(You might be DPS, but still cast Lay on Hands if the tank is dying, for example. Specs aren’t as restricted in Vanilla as they are in modern WoW, and even a ret paladin or feral druid can throw out a few strong heals with significant effect.)

https://classic.wowhead.com/guides/classic-wow-classes-and-talent-overview

WoW has the three core roles–Tank, Healing, and DPS, as well as the concept of a hybrid role. Different talent trees emphasize certain roles over others.

  • Tank : A sturdy melee character that absorbs and deflects damage to protect the rest of the party.
    • Druid (Feral Combat), Paladin (Protection), Warrior (Protection)
  • Healer : A character that focuses on casting spells to increase the health bars of others in the party, with a secondary emphasis on providing utility and resurrecting dead party members.
    • Druid (Restoration), Paladin (Holy), Priest (Discipline, Holy), Shaman (Restoration)
  • DPS : These classes prioritize dealing damage to enemies. They can either be Melee, using weapons to deal damage up close to the boss, or Ranged, casting spells from afar. Melee classes are generally sturdier than Ranged classes, but have dangerous mechanics like Cleave to worry about. These roles generally have weaker utility than Hybrids.
    • Ranged DPS: Hunter (Beast Mastery, Marksman, Survival), Mage (Arcane, Fire, Frost), Warlock (Affliction, Demonology, Destruction)

    • Melee DPS: Rogue (Assassination, Combat, Subtlety), Warrior (Arms, Fury)

  • Hybrid : These roles can deal damage but have a stronger emphasis on utility than a pure DPS.
    • Hybrid Melee: Druid (Feral Combat), Paladin (Retribution), Shaman (Enhancement)

    • Hybrid Ranged: Druid (Balance), Priest (Shadow), Shaman (Elemental)

If you want to rule the world, pick warrior.

They are not so good without gear, but once you get gear you surpass everyone by a mile. Not a little mile either, huge mile in both pve and pvp. Unstoppable killer!

Either go Orc or Dwarf… best racials for pvp, and for pve they are all about same.

yeah i mean bein a op dps would be cool but i sorta dont wanna be the same thing as everyone else lol. whats the fun of a mmorpg if everyones the same thing?

If you don’t want to be the same thing as everyone else then you might like druid.
Druids are one of the least played classes (however that might be because they are so slow to level up to lvl 10, sometimes even to 20 that you’ll want to gouge your eyes out).
