How to pick a class

wow content is challenging and to face it you need to build skill. you should build skill controllably and comfortably to flow. i want to outline what classes provide what control !! because its hard to pick a class. PS feel free to play more than one class

Cognitive Approach

is not easy to pay attention to whats going on? then you shouldn’t play a melee class.

is it not easy to stand in one spot? then you shouldn’t play a long-cast ranged class.

do you have patience and can intuitively know what to do next? then you might like energy/focus classes like Monk, Hunter, Rogue, and feral Druid. Energy resource is a concrete tempo that auto-replenishes if you spend it.

do you like taking direct control of what spells you will cast? then you should play the myriad of builder-spender classes. you build the resource, like Rage, then you spend it: Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Demon Hunter, Shaman, Warlock, and balance Druid
And then some specs have combinations waiting and building like Death Knight.

do you not care about predictability and want randomized flow? then play frost Mage, fury Warrior, feral Druid, outlaw Rogue, elemental Shaman, and frost Death Knight. these classes have spell procs to watch for

do you like to be responsible for your friends’ health? then play a support class.

do you like to be responsible for the rhythm of the dungeon and like picking routes? then play a tank class.

do you like to have complete control of your situation? then play a proactive support like Druid and Discipline Priest. or play a self-sufficient tank like Blood Death Knight.

do you like to go with the flow? did you not even look up the fight? then play dps. but not everyone will like you…
jokes and also play reactive healers like Shaman, Paladin, Monk, and Holy Priest

are you most comfortable when you’re the one driving the boat? are things done best when you’re doing them? then play a tank. Blood DKs tricky maybe don’t start there

Spec Profile Approach

heres some specs that have good niches you can fill. credit to that one Limit Max video I watched in 9.0

Balance Druids have great spread-out Area-of-Effect damage from Starfall, and can talent to MOVE while casting it. good beginner class. this makes it a great leveling/solo class along with all its kiting spells! (and invisibility)

Frost Mages have the best funnel damage from Frozen Orb and a one minute damage CoolDown. good beginner class, you press Frostbolt half the time. yeah, slows like with Frostbolt make this a great leveling/solo class, too!

Fire Mages have cheat-death, execute, good mass AOE damage, and the one-minute CD.

Destruction Warlocks have great spread two-target damage.

Shadow Priests have great single-target damage but Blizzard changes the spec so much its a shaky pick to main.

Warriors have good execute damage and mobility.

Demon Hunters have good AOE damage, good mobility, and good self-sustain. yeah overall they’re a great leveling/solo class.

Death Knights have execute, self-sustain, and high HP. Frost has good cleave, and Unholy has mass AOE and good single target. and they have the spell Anti Magic Zone for magic damage reduction

Monks have good burst, good cleave, good mobility, and uncapped AOE from Whirling Dragon Punch.

Execute is more damage at the end of the fight.
Funnel is more damage when the kill-target is surrounded by mobs.

if you wanna raid heal every healers viable in Season 4. maybe don’t main Resto Druid long term. Druids tricky and not great every tier.

just don’t main Bear Druid lol

reminds of people who post on /Adviceanimals asking for actual animal advice

Can it drink in combat? No? Easy decision, I don’t want to play it.

This seems overly complicated. When picking a class I just ask myself if I feel like shooting stuff with arrows, shooting stuff with magic, stabbing stuff in the back sneakily, or smashing stuff with a giant hammer.

yeah your class fantasy and aesthetic matters a lot. point is out of those classes you like, some of them are gonna be better to control than others. i really like to whack stuff with glowy hammers as a Paladin, but as an alt. Shaman is the best class to control for me.
