Is there a way to join the chat channel for a zone your not in >?
There sure is.
Go to that zone 
As far as I know, there isn’t a way to do this. It would be incredibly handy though.

Back in actual vanilla it was possible. doesnt seem to be any more.

Why did you nerco the thread without actually adding anything to it?
You can /enter certain chats, or /join certain channels.
There also used to be addons such as the world defense addon that would show you any zone anywhere that was being attacked. World Defense.
