This is just my opinion here, but if Holy Nova is going to be the staple of Holy Priests AOE (instead of Mindsear) then I feel like we should improve upon it.
Current PTR:
Holy Nova
1.6% of base mana
Instant
An explosion of holy light around you deals up to (18% of Spell power) Holy damage to enemies and up to (18% of Spell power) healing to allies within 12 yads, reduced if there are more than 5 targets.
[If your Holy Nova deals damage to at least 3 enemies, a second Holy Nova will be cast a moment later at 50% effectiveness at the same location.]
Potential suggestion:
Holy Nova
3.5% of base mana
Instant
25 Yard Range
10 second cooldown
You unleash a beacon of holy light at your target (ally or enemy) which deals up to (27% of Spell power) Holy damage every 1 second for 4 seconds to any enemy within 12 yards. Once the spell is complete any ally standing within 12 yards of the effect is healed for 200% of the damage dealt split evenly amongst them.
So this is something you can cast on a tank inbetween heal rotations.

No we should not improve upon it, we should just have both Nova & Mind Sear, as past iterations of priest had.
I suspect there was no compelling balance or gameplay reason for it’s removal, it’s just that class designers think we are “too dumb” to handle two different AoE spells.

Hell no.
Let’s leave the paladins and the monks as the CqC healers.
They have better defensive skills and it makes more sense for them to be at melee range.
They just have to give us Mind Sear.

hmm not sure.
I like the idea of it being us bursting light through our bodies like an explosion instead of a range light spell.
Why can’t we have both?
I mean I’m just talking about the author propose to change the spell.
I don’t mind having mind sear + holy nova as tools in my kit

Blizzard seems adamant that Holy Nova is to be the main AOE for Holy so might as well make it better.

Holy Nova used to be really fun at the beginning of Legion in a few rare scenarios, I could beat the DPS in the room with the 50+ imps in Vault of the Wardens…until the imps died, then my dps plummeted. It was not broken. It was not OP. It had one tiny use case… with 50+ targets you can do decent damage.
Then they nerfed its damage by 90% and it’s been in the trash heap ever since.
Not to mention we have to be in melee to use Holy Nova, which is a big downside by itself. Removing Mind Sear, and apparently Mind Blast too, is so frustrating.
I thought, for a split second, that there was someone on the Priest design team that understood/played Holy, but I’ve since been shown that it was a stupid thing to think.

I actually like being in melee in M+. I want to be using divine star to hit the tank and mobs anyways. And as a priest I want to be close in case the tank dashes off I can quickly get into range. Some tanks can zoom to the next pull but I can not zoom.
It’s still a liability, especially with the new affix that spawns mobs from dead enemies that hit like trucks, being a clothy means you’ll often get one shot.
I think it just needs a damage buff.
The new interaction they gave it sounds ok though.
Maybe they could add a proc after doing something that your next holy nova will deal extra damage and healing and it changes also the animation to something more holy and powerful.
Make holy nova spread and refresh the holy fire DoT to all enemies hit (if one has the dot up). It does slightly more DPS than sunfire (based on wowhead SP numbers, not sure if aura modifiers change it) but has a shorter duration and would require more input from the priest to keep up than sunfire.

Agreed. The spell power multiplier wasn’t changed so now it drops off further after 5 targets while already doing so little damage and healing in the first place because it’s designed to have no target cap.
