How to Implement the Level Squish

A level squish won’t accomplish anything so long as level scaling remains in place. You can’t have meaningful player progression if mobs scale up right with you.

like i said you dont have to slog through EVERY old expansion.

Semantics. You used to have to. Only having to do half made levelling much better. Only having to do ONE would be better still.

The number of levels don’t matter. It could be 17, 25, 42, or as high as 9999. So long as the Activities you engage in that fill up the XP bar are fun and engaging.

Gaining a level is pointless if the work you do to get that level is unfun and not engaging.

When the CONTENT is messed up, everything attached to it (including the levelling system) ends up feeling bad as well.

This discussion is moot. All the amazing things the OP is claiming could happen probably won’t.

The purpose of this post and others like it is to get buy-in from players who have not yet gotten any specific details about what it would do to their gameplay.

We’ll actually be stuck with a badly-conceived and badly-implemented squish that will make everything it touches worse in every way.

Would be nice, but there is no money in it…mmorpgs are in their sunset years…

To OP,

I would not trust blizzard to do it correctly the lvl squish to be honest…the time played matrix and fun are not very compatible imo…

Well, this is the fear, isn’t it? That’s why I throw out suggestions like this. Hopefully someone at Blizz will take notes. Positive feedback is much more useful to Blizz than grutching.

I’d say just take the 1-60 experience and make it so you unlock all of your abilities, talents, trades, and mounts by 60 (minus the current expansion stuff).

Next turn all of the old expansions into their own unique leveling path (just like the changes to professions in BFA). These will be completely optional on new characters but will be required to unlock any raids or other content from that expansion.

Finally, the current expansion would also be its own set of levels separate from the rest and not required for new characters once we move on to the next expansion. But you could go straight from 60 “classic levels” right into the “BFA levels” or whatever they are called, instead of slogging through every expansion each time.

That’s pretty much the idea, except I move the old expansion to the 50-60 slot to coincide with the original Classic end-game. That way, all raid content is lvl 60.

The day blizzard steals 60 levels from my character is the day I quit playing for good.

Its a stupid idea that will cause many players to quit.

No thank you. level squish is a very bad idea just like level scaling is.

How to fix the too many levels problem so long time missing players can come back to current content. Use item level for progression. Cap character level at 60. Each expansion has 100 or so item levels, reputation grinds, pathfinder, achievements, etc. There’s plenty to do without adding 10 numbers. Start new expansions with a gear pack to bring 1 toon up to speed. As time progresses open up heirloom upgrades so people can start out more of their characters.

Another good reason for a level squish is it condenses players into a smaller pool. For matchmaking purposes such as battlegrounds/dungeons etc

They’re not stealing levels. 120/120 =100%

60/60= 100%

120/120=60/60

No we really don’t.

Smoke and mirrors.

Um god no. Classic -------->

None of those made it interesting.

so then 1/1=60/60=120/120? Guess we should remove all leveling and have everyone just start at level 1!

This is actually… really good and well thought out.

They could STILL offer rewards for every level without resorting to a squish if they wanted to.

First: Get rid of the concept of armor or weapons that you have to level up and apply resources to in order to get various talents. Just award us the damn talents as we level.

Second: For levels that don’t grant a talent or spell, award a loot cache. Depending on the level, this could have things like gold, potions/flasks, a piece of gear, pets, toys–even a mount.

Wanting a squish because you think it otherwise isn’t possible to get a reward for every level is extremely unimaginative and basically playing into Blizzard’s hands. Because they don’t want to be bothered to come up with nice rewards for 130 levels so they want to take the cheap way out.

JUST SAY “NO” TO A LEVEL SQUISH.

We can have our levels AND rewards.

I really like that idea, actually. I think squish or no, they should implement that.

I still want a squish, though. 60+ levels of old expansion content, not finishing stories anywhere, having to go through more and more stat squishes and old expansion shuffles like making BC & WotLK both 60-80 will still happen over and over again unless max level is fixed and never raised again.
