They drop from everything. Dungeons. Heroics. BGs. Whatever. It is however RNG whether it drops or not.
I found the fastest way to catch up(outside of callings and cov quests) is LFR. On multiple characters I got renown drops from 7/10 bosses.

ok so, the plan is to do finish all 3 covenant campaigns, then do 500 more heroic dungeons across all 3 of my characters to get them to 170 ilvl so i can queue for lfr

It really is simple! You don’t even need to do heroics!
Do the cov campaign as its unlocked and upgrade your gear and you’ll be 170+ in a couple of days.

i remember vendoring them on my main because it’s too expensive to transmog and 250(?) gold vendor price is good money
So the first piece of gear you get will be like 158 or something at rank 1. Each quest line you complete will reward the higher rank compared to the last one. So you should only need to upgrade 1/2 pieces tfor those pieces to be higher than 170. Which will be like a total of 200ish Anima? Once you start getting into the 184+ ilvl ranks… Yea the Anima can be kind of expensive but it really is the fastest way to gear your character atm.

Yup, LFR is definitely the fastest way.
Just queue up for LFR while doing Callings and Covenant campaign and you would be able to keep going on the campaign quest without stopping (as LFR would fill in the Renown requirement).
Today is weekly reset day, so get in LFR before reset!
Note that, a high ilevel Legendary vessel can jack up your ilevel massively, especially for the lowest ilevel slot. They don’t bind to you, so just keep it in your inventory.
- Do covenant campaign all the way through as fast as possible. (This also has the advantage of quickly boosting your iLvl, esp with upgrades of cov armor.)
- Do callings
(This character hit 60 three weeks ago. Hit 40 Renown over weekend doing the above and the Torghast quest lines.)
So I’ve been grinding renown on an alt the last couple days and from my experience mythic 0’s and any mythic+ will give you one renown when you kill the last boss.
Each raid boss has a chance to give you a renown, doesn’t seem like a very high chance though.
Callings have a chance to give you renown as well. So far 3/4 callings I got gave renown as a reward.
I hit 60 on Saturday and I’m currently renown 22 so it’s not terrible.
Pretty sure you only get Renown from Callings, the 2 Covenant Weeklies, the weekly World Boss and the Covenant Campaign/Torghast Campaign quest lines.
