I have a back decoration that looks like an animal head in a basket/crate. It appears sometimes and goes away at other times. How do I hide it or get rid of it altogether?

Sounds like the skinning gear that shows whenever you use the skill (skinning? leatherworking?). There’s a buff you can right-click to dispel it.
There are also NPCs near the trainer areas you can talk to in order to suppress it from lingering around after you finish using the skill (I can’t remember their names off the top of my head).

Yeah, that’s profession gear. The tauren lady sitting near the Tailoring table in Valdrakken can turn that stuff off if you don’t want to see it anymore.
