Have a few items with sockets. But where do I get gems like: Skillful Illimited Diamond? Or the Inscribed Illimited Diamond? I searched the AH and is seems there is nothing from the most recent expansions.

Those types of gems are crafted. So youll have to send an order to someone once you get the materials. Do not do a public order as youll pay someone who will just send a 2* and you cant recraft a gem like you can armor/weapons.
Typically it is 2 “awakened” pieces like order and air, then a gem like malygite or alexstazite and then an illimited diamond.

Any public orders I see, I make at max quality.

Im a stickler. I always provide 3* materials and a good tip, but gems I always got 2* gems on public orders. So I just do personal. I figure those doing 2* are the same ones doing orders and providing no mats and a 100g tip

The problem you can run in to with the Illimited diamonds is that even maxed out with knowledge points and all rank five crafting equipment you still can’t guarantee a rank three cut, unless you use an insight. I think one or two of the races with a JC bonus can do it without an insight. But it’s one of those items that you need to cross your fingers and hope for the best on a public order.

I don’t really care about the commission, I just want to craft. But I don’t hang out in trade chat, so I’ve been invisible to the community.

Even a Draenei with a racial bonus to jc is still off a few points off guarantee. And RNG still rear its ugly head to fail em.
Tbh, that 2star vs 3star debate is really silly.
2star gem has 10 int/agi/str and 10 haste/crit LESS than 3star version, thats 0,066% main stat difference at ilvl 485. Does this really matter, it is like question of life or death, its like everyone and their dog are progressing last mythic boss.
Very few people are willing to pay few thousands gold for guaranteed R3 gem, “because it is just a gem”, but problem is its crafting is quite expensive for a crafter.
Every maxed crafter needs to use an Insight for r3 guaranteed gem and Insights dont grow on trees, we can get only 4 per week, meaning only 4 guaranteed crafts per week.
And then people want to pay 50 or 100g for gem, they want r3 ofc.
That is why I dont want to craft primal gems at all since I can spend my Insights (mettle) on much more profitable items, arguing with people is just not worth it.

When you give all 3* mats and provide a few k in gold though, you expect 3*. Especially when they cant be recrafted.
And when you are ocd, getting a 2* just feels off. When buying things like enchants, ill see 2* for 90g and 3* being almost 7k (Im talking to you, Sophic Devotion) and will of course only buy the 2*. But it feels weird (hard to explain)

Sure, it is fine expectation when you use personal orders and negotiate with crafter.
But when you get best mats in public crafting order with message “best quality, otherwise dont do it” and 50g comission, I just dont do it. Sure it might proc r3, but odds are less than 50:50 when not using Insight.
50g-200g is nothing in wow economy and it is just insulting, not to mention public orders caps at 1 per day.
I will mostly use an insight if they give me 1k on a public order.
I understand that part. Low tips or bad/no mats. Ill do public orders for LW if all mats provided, no matter the tip (not altar of decay though) since im sitting on like 200 insight worth of mettle,
Gems are the outlier. The only thing that isnt sold on the AH, but also cant be recrafted/cut. So exclusively personal orders here.
Yes, that is absolute minimum for Insight.
What do you do when it is less than 1k? Pass on it or craft on proc?
If you are swimming in Mettle, that is another story. I would rather craft 3star mats and sell on AH with that many Mettle.
depends on whether I am near my work order limit or not but I am not going to care if someone gets a rank 2 if they give 200g.

In reading the responses, am I understanding correctly that people don’t craft items anymore to put on the AH? They wait for someone to put in an order and provide the mats?
(I did a cursory pass through DF, but just couldn’t get into it so I’m clueless about professions)
The best crafted gear / gems are crafted in the crafting system.
Most of the things you wear can be crafted in the crafting system.
Some you can buy in the AH, others only via crafting because it result in a BoP item.
I don’t worry about if it’s the best version of the gem since anything in the slot is better than an empty slot! So are professions like jewelcrafting not worth the time or mats to post stuff on the AH?
To bypass the undercutting morons on the ah, primal gems were made part of the new crafting system. You can still go struggling to sell other regular gems through the ah if you like that sort of thing. Also the mats are subject to the whims of said undercutting morons so are going ever down in prices.
