Ok, this might be controversial for many reasons. To me the one-button option, although great for accessibility, is not going to help Controller (Xbox) players join WoW. There are just too many buttons, and the one-button option isn’t going to help new WoW Controller players. In fact, it may hinder those players from learning their rotations. So, here goes:
Bite the bullet! Develop new classes for Controller (Xbox) players: fewer buttons, but on a level playing field with PC players. That’s what I would do if I was in charge, but I’m not. Thank goodness they will say. Let the gnashing of teeth begin.
You don’t need a new control scheme for controller, though: I play with an XBox controller set up, have been for over a year now, and it works great! It supports multi-press and I can bind all my class abilities in a way that is very comfortable and responsive.
I think WoW already works fine with controller. You may need to set up macros for convenience but, well, people do that anyway.
I don’t use the OBR, nor do I have any need to. It’s there if folks need it.
this is unnecessary. you can play all of the current classes on a Controller right now, as is.
there is no need to develop new classes specifically for Controller users. Contrary to popular belief, classes do not have “too many buttons” for Controller.
I’ll leave the arguing about it to the rest of you, though.
Yeah, I got my primaries on my four face and shoulder buttons, the most commonly used stuff and my interrupt. Interrupt is always LB across all my classes. RT is either my execute or in Guuah’s case Hunter’s Mark.
LB + Face are utilities, RT + face are heals and CC, LB + RB and LT + RT are wombo CDs.
LB + Directionals are defensives, RT + stuff are situational. Up is tab targeting, right is mobility, down is situational mobility, left is mount because heck if I’m not mounting in an efficient manner. It’s like having to use Torrent from the menu in Elden Ring every time.
Start is inventory, Back activates a mouse interface to allow me to ‘click’ on things. Left stick is my Interface Key, right stick is my jump.
Just from those I have so many things bound. Everything I use, and I can swap them without any hassle. It’s been such a relaxing way to play compared to hunching over a keyboard. I certainly feel like I’m on more than equal footing with KB + M players.
I don’t doubt it can be done. I just wonder how many kb/mouse players there are compared to controller players. Let’s see what everybody’s favorite AI has to say:
Currently, World of Warcraft (WoW) is primarily a PC game and is not natively available on Xbox consoles. However, there are some nuances to this:
No Native Xbox Version: Blizzard Entertainment developed WoW for PC, and there is no dedicated Xbox version of the game. The complex interface with dozens of ability slots, macros, and add-ons is designed for keyboard and mouse gameplay and doesn’t translate well to standard console controllers.
Controller Support (on PC): WoW does have some native gamepad support on PC, which was introduced to improve accessibility. However, this is not designed for a full console experience and may still be awkward for many aspects of the game.
Cloud Streaming via GeForce NOW: It is technically possible to play World of Warcraft on Xbox through Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. This allows you to stream the PC version of the game to your Xbox console via the Microsoft Edge browser.
Microsoft Ownership and Future Possibilities: With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, there’s a lot of speculation about WoW potentially coming to Xbox in the future. Microsoft has a history of bringing PC-only titles to Xbox, and other successful MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online are available on consoles. While Blizzard has stated “nothing’s impossible,” there are no concrete plans for a native Xbox port at this time due to the significant changes required for the game’s interface and engine.
In summary, while you can’t just download and play WoW directly on your Xbox, you can access it through cloud streaming, and there’s ongoing discussion about a potential future console release.
Yep, it’s already 100% playable on controller, no need for fewer buttons. Been playing on controller for years now, including some classic raiding and retail M+ low keys.
Biggest drawback is that you’re limited to tab targeting. And that healing is limited to using a cursor for picking heal targets.
For anyone interested, as others have pointed out: ConsolePort. WoW feels great on controller.
I don’t mind people playing with a controller. I just don’t think they should design specific content or classes solely for controllers. seems a bit exclusionary.
