So, there’s an issue with this ending - the Archimonde we killed is supposedly OUR Archimonde, because there’s apparently only one Burning Legion across all realities. However, the Time Rifts show that there are numerous timelines and numerous Legions, with some of them resulting in the Legion winning.
I think there’s an easy fix for this issue. There ISN’T just one Legion; there’s obviously one per timeline/universe. As for Archimonde, I think it makes sense that Gul’dan simply made contact with our Archimonde, which ties into Garrosh establishing a connection with AU Draenor and our Azeroth. Garrosh was planning an assault on our world, so Gul’dan took advantage of this and planned his own assault, which ended with him being sent to our timeline to carry out this plan.
This way, we can still have multiple Legions across different timelines, but we actually did kill our Archimonde in WoD. What do y’all think?
I would vote for that only if we have our Archimonde come back leading the forgiven Man’ari Draenei. Better yet! AU Kil’jaeden joining to create a new triumvirate… Let’s get freaky Eredar style! Burning Legion 2.0 - Electric Bugaloo Alternate Azeroth version! Now with more demons!

Gul’dan did do some digging after all.
Kil’jaeden most certainly abandoned Gul’dan the moment he failed so Gul’dan left without allies was left trying to figure out who Khadgar was and ended up getting into contact with the MU Legion’s Archimonde who decided to transmit a mocking transmission to AU Kil’jaeden verbalizing his plan to invade AU Draenor and grab the Draenei Souls for himself before sending AU Gul’dan to the MU to arrange a Legion invasion of MU Azeroth.
Since MU Archimonde was in AU Draenor when he died that means he is probably blurting out secrets of MU Azeroth to AU Sargeras.

I would postulate this notion:
That may have been his opinion.
Perhaps Archimonde saw fit to traverse the various timeways and dimensions in his free time, making sure he was the Archimonde that was known and feared.
He was confident in what he knew, but that doesn’t mean he knew everything. I don’t see knowledge beyond Archimonde’s scope as a Retcon - I just see it as different perspectives.
Heck, Elisande thought she saw it all until we showed her what for.
WoD’s ending may have had flaws — But it was still 999999999999x better than Shadowlands ending, by leagues far.
That’s like choosing between a ca-ca sandwich vs a ca-ca sandwich that fell on the floor. One is theoretically better than the other, perhaps.
But they’re both full of it.
To the topic and hand, I wouldn’t struggle to hard against a retcon to the “One Legion” nonsense. Not exactly a widely beloved facet of Warcraft lore, that.
Shadowlands caused WoW subs to crash lower than WoD based on the financial statement review, which had other MMOs rise up higher than ever before – Along with many of the lore-content creators quit WoW content because of how horrid the lore was, outright stating it was worse than WoD because they retconned & changed just about everything from classic to Shadowlands merely to boost up ‘The Jailor’ villain.
When you look at shear numbers, reviews & outcry — WoD wasn’t just better than Shadowlands in theory - It was much better practically.

Just for my edification, you’re being facetious here, correct? I don’t assume to know as much as you or the other lore folks here but reading about an “AU Sargeras”…that’s not a thing, right? I mean, that seems like a headache to keep narratively straight. (Which is why I know that time travel and multiverse can be dangerous for stories)
The OP is putting forth the notion that there are AU Burning Legions(which would necessarily mean AU Sargeras) and I am working with the OP’s train of thought for the sake of humoring the OP.
I myself am following Blizzard’s One Legion claim since otherwise as you’ve said it would cause a headache.

Got it. I need better reading comprehension. Thank you for the succinct synopsis
