How to determine if I am geared for Phase 5 raids

The title is pretty self-explanatory. I have never really played pure vanilla and didn’t actually raid for real until WOTLK back in the day. With how pvp gear works in this version, it is hard for me to determine if I’m ready gear wise. I am rank 12 in pvp, and I am a tank in raids. I have frostbite and the immovable object as my main hand and off hand. My bracers and belt are the mc boe drops. Grand Marshall necklace, frostwolf cape. Trinkets are mark of the chosen and rune of the guard captain. Any advice is appreciated.

Should be fine in OT role. Though spec wise are you a deep prot or fury prot?

Deep prot, picked this over deep fury for survivability reasons. Helps the healer in our guild (she’s still learning vanilla too). Second spec is my pvp spec

Gotcha, yeah I typically do feral tanking but the gear you mentioned will be perfectly fine in OT roles. Your threat output won’t be as good as a furyprot or a bear but those are negligible if you are doing OT’n.

Just make sure you got your hitcap (or as close as possible to it) and because you’re an orc using axes you don’t need to worry about weapon skills.

Def keep doing your BWL’s though and/or push for R13/14.

I do use axes so I currently have 305 wep skill and 5% hit off my gear. Im a pecentage shy of cap lol, thank you for the help man. Super appreciate it

One helpful note is that unlike future expansions, going deeper in the prot tree doesn’t really provide much, if any survivability.

If your threat is good deep prot is fine, but if you find dps has to throttle themselves or keeps pulling switch to fury-prot.

A common misconception is that fury-prot doesnt use a shield. The truth is you use a shield pretty much any time your threat is good or incoming phys damage is high.

There is no way to reasonably reach defense cap in vanilla, so you always take the first point of shield block talent in prot. When shield block is active, you are temporarily immune to crushing blows/crits.

If incoming damage is low or mostly magic, switch to dual wield (or if more threat is needed).

You want to focus on gear with hit + raw stats (raw agi is better than crit or dodge). the block Value from strength is so negligible that its not worth worrying about, and unlike tbc - onward does not contribute to threat. Only the blocking portion of the block is key, not the reduction in damage like future expacs.

pvp gear is absolutely fine, I MT’d BWL in rank 10 gear, the best part of the r12 set is the legs/boots combo imo

You don’t need great gear. AQ40 is actually really easy. The trash is just annoying.

The bosses are not hard. CTHUN is a joke.

R12 gear is plenty good enough. Just try and get a good weapon from MC or BWL or Ony.

There are no real DPS checks.

You can probably clear in R12 gear with a weapon from AH as long as you have world buffs.

The problem is you won’t have world buffs for long because you are going to die to the trash a lot unless you are in a good guild.

The trash is very annoying and you have to know how to handle it.
