How to deal with groups as a hunter

I play usually as a solo hunter, and find it is impossible to fight more than 2 enemies at once. If I don’t have a break between fighting two enemies, I run out of mana and my pet ends up dying bc he can’t heal during combat and I can’t heal bc I’m oom. Is there something I am missing in the class? I am currently lvl 21.
Idk why it put this under my druid, ignore that.

Try leveling as beastmastery, also make sure all pets abils are current highest available rank so it kills faster thus taking less dmg. Save some mana for mend pet if multi/chain pulls are an issue, most of the time auto shoot is enough dmg with pet to take.down things your own level. If none of that helps, try a tankier pet, like a bear, or boar

Great ideas here. Thank you!

I leveled with an Owl. Best leveling pet imo because it has screech, which is an aoe threat generator. Also quite tanky.

You can’t spam Arcane Shots or you will go oom.

Owl is the best here because it can hold aoe aggro with screech, letting you at least Mend when it has multiple on it.

Otherwise you can split damage by tanking a mob on yourself, kiting one with wingclip + auto shot on the move (use WeaponSwing Timer so you can time your auto shots), or using freezing trap to cc a mob for short bit. It’s easy fighting 2 things as a hunter but 3 requires a bit of a dance. Don’t feel bad about not being able to fight more than that at once.

Have you been to your pet trainer and trained your pet’s stamina and armor skills, then taught those to your pet? Sorry to ask such a basic question, but if he’s dying a lot then he might be too squishy for his level.

You do need to manage your mana expenditures a bit more when taking on 3-4 yellows, but the fights are easily doable (with a bit of downtime afterwards). It just takes a bit of practice, depending on your spec. I was mostly Beastmaster back in the Vanilla WoW days, but in Classic I have only been Survival spec thus far (& having a lot of fun mixing range with melee/traps). It’s always good to carry stacks of 5 mana & 5 health potions of reasonable effectiveness versus your level, as well as to have First Aid (& know when/how to use it in combat) - you never know when you might need them in a pinch. Also make sure your pet is up-to-date trained in their own skills. Disengage can also be a very useful ability for transferring or even strategically ping-ponging aggro with your pet. You can do quite a bit of different types of crazy pulls & solo encounters with a Hunter given their toolbox of abilities. Good luck.

Let pet pull. Trap down. Max range. Let pet establish aggro on kill target. Use multi to get adds off him and on their way to you. When one is trapped, fd to get other off you. Kill target should be nearing death, one mob is running back doing nothing but traveling, and one is trapped.

Always pull extra to you then fd before they hit you. So long as they’re not hitting your pet, they’re absolutely useless and just running back and forth.

Pull one off your pet and just face tank it until mob 1 dies…You can take a lot of hits at level 21. Once mob one dies, just have pet pull him off you.

If you pull too many, just cheetah & run as far as possible while the pet tanks. If you get far enough away, your pet will just despawn and you’ll drop combat. You can just call pet if they despawn (as opposed to rezzing).

L 21 - no FD yet.

the natural armour & great stamina talents help a lot… even resistances if you have spare TP. my cat can solo 2 mobs now, i slap a bandage on him and off he goes again

To quote another player, I prefer to “run away screaming like a little girl”. :grinning: That always works for me if I pull too many mobs. Mage, hunter, class doesn’t matter. As long as I have a head-start (and don’t get dazed) the mobs will eventually stop following.

I play hunters a lot (though I play other classes). Where possible, my hunters don’t fight groups. I think that solo killing goes faster. As a hunter, downtime is very low when I solo kill things.

How do you handle mana? Several hunter guides say “let most of your dps come from auto-shot”. I put a sting-dot and hunter’s mark on the target (not too much mana) and let the rest of my damage be auto-shot and pet damage. Then if there’s an emergency (the pet will die before the mobs) I have mana I can use up to heal the pet and/or to add some damaging shots.

In solo leveling my pet is my tank. In dungeon groups, I target a mob the tank has aggro on. AOE targets everything, so it pulls (to you) any mobs the tank doesn’t have enough aggro on. Same is true soloing – unless your pet has good aggro on ALL the mobs in a group, any AOE by you pulls mobs to you. Usually you don’t want that. So if my pet has 2 or 3 mobs, I often pick the one it has the best aggro on to kill first with my hunter.

Boar or owl is a good pet.

Owl has aoe and Boar has pig charge which when kept up to level is a huge threat attack.

Ill be honest, since having played hunter from day 1 (and a lot of people have forgotten just how tough vanilla content can actually be), fighting one mob at a time with hunter as a solo player is pretty much the defacto standard in classic. As others have said an Owl with it’s screech is the best way to handle more than one, also a boar with charge can be a life saver. Also, as mentioned, make sure you go to your pet trainer also, get relevant rank ups and spend TP as applicable on your pet.

IMHO there were great reasons in following expacks to do away with mana as a resource for hunter. Don’t feel bad though, if you find that 2 mobs are difficult to manage, it can be if you don’t outclass them.

Shouldn’t be taking on more than one at a time. This is classic. Unless you’re really on your toes, every class has a tough time with 3 mobs.

Warlock is a bit of an exception because it can tank 2 and fear one. Hunters can only fear beasts. Mages are another exception because they can freeze stuff in place and AoE.

I’m surprised nobody mentionned traps, use your traps effectiively it’ll make fighting more than one mob way easier.

Once you get to level 30 and have frost trap + feign death it will become easier. Basically have pet on the first kill target while you’re at max range with frost trap set in front of you. Use multishot to pull all adds to you until they hit the trap. Then feign death and the mobs will slowly walk back to your cat. I use this ping pong method on any large pulls. Additionally, you can push out a second trap by putting pet on passive and tell it to follow while in combat, feign death and use trap. The in combat trapping takes practice but it’s absolutely an essential part of playing a hunter.

Edit: Until you hit 30, play it safe and pull mobs out into a safe area before sending pet in to engage.

Always level as BM. Get a boar if horde, owl if ally. Make a pet attack macro. Dont waste mana on serpent sting. Keep your pet up and practice pet control until you are confident you could take 2 to 3 mobs on by keeping your pet healed.

Use bandages on your pet between combat, saves mana compared to mend. If first aide has been kept up to speed, it’ll heal your pet quickly enough.
