How to completely disable voice chat?

I remember someone having a workaround for how to disable the in game voice chat completely. It’s getting to the point now where a few friends of mine and myself can’t stand the game freezing every single time we join a party or log into the game, because it’s trying to connect to voice chat.

(And no, it’s not an add-on issue. Happens on a clean install, new user profile and new cache and wtf. It’s just something that some of us are dealing with.)

Anyone remember how to do that disable? Thanks!

Never had this happen or seen it happen to anyone or had anyone I know tell me it’s happened.

I think you’re exaggerating.

But… There isn’t a way in WoW according to this Blue Post

Hiya Xaxiimbo,

I am sorry but you can’t disable the voice chat, in the games sound settings. But it should only activate when you’ve joined a group and you’ve clicked on the microphone icon. So shouldn’t be using any extra data without pressing that button.

Another poster in that thread suggested selecting “NO DEVICE” under mic settings if it’s available as an option.

So… because the people you know haven’t had an issue means someone else can’t? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Please show me where there was any exxageration in my post. All I asked for was the method to disable it. Which was posted on the old forums. Which also had posts about people having this problem. I just can’t find the old post and was looking for help.

I could care less if they change how voice chat works. I have no agenda here. Just want to know if anyone remembers how to disable it.

And thanks for finding that. It’s not the method someone else posted, but I’ll try it!

In order for it to use any memory or bandwidth it would have to be turned on…meaning you’d need to actually click the microphone in game to turn it on. If you never turn it on it won’t interfere with anything.

It’s no different than the group you’re in using Discord/Mumble/etc. but you not joining in with them but still claiming your PC/Laptop is lagging because they are using it.

I think you’re exaggerating because it’s a feature that you don’t need to use. It will not automatically turn on, you have to manually “join” it. It can’t do anything if you don’t join it.

Additionally, as much as players claim to hate being in voice of any kind I doubt many LFR/LFD groups actually use it. Most PuG groups use Discord.

Either way, what I gave you is all I could find.

Except that it’s not how it works. Every time I log into the game, it lags on the loading screen and I see the following message when it finally lets me in: “Attempting to connect to voice chat.” And that’s not even in a group. My mic and volume are muted on it.

I don’t care whether it’s there or not-- except when joining groups and logging on see such a lag that never existed until voice chat and reference it every single time.

Having it muted doesn’t mean it’s not running. It is always running. It’s always trying to connect when you join groups or log into the game. You can even watch the process running. A mute button has zero to do with that.

Same thing happens to me. So, you are not alone.

I haven’t noticed any lag, but I have been seeing the message about unable to connect to voice chat, and people in my guild said the same thing. It seems to me that if it was ‘off’ there wouldn’t be a message.

I usually see the “disconnected from voice chat/reconnecting to voice chat” messages when I teleport to Broken Isles Dalaran. Not sure if the message is caused by lag from porting into the zone or what. The game is clearly trying to do something, but I’m not sure what it is. I’ve never used the voice chat feature.

Yeah I don’t know either. Those lag me out too. It’s really odd.

Have you considered updating your drivers?

If the game is freezing up when it’s connecting to voice, there’s something wrong with your computer.

Yup! Everything is up to date. It’s always the first thing I check. But thanks! :slightly_smiling_face:

I think I remember seeing that it could be disabled under Parental Controls.

You can disable access to account chat, but the client still has it, it’s just not accessible.

The game doesn’t run the chat by default though, and unless you are in a party or group that has a voice channel, you have to also allow the chat to enable, at this time I know of no way to completely disable it.

If this continues and a full ui reset doesn’t help, follow up with tech support,

I have tried with tech support and they keep telling me the same thing: it’s not running. And yet it is. Because I’m watching it run. So… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The chat is always enabled. It’s simply whether or not you have it muted.

I did find a few ways to disable it, so I’ll try those. Thanks all!

I am going to go with , your sound program for your sound card is initializing voice chat because -it- might be set to talk on demand (any sound)
If it’s realtek this is a real thing, I was getting echo problems at one point because the mic was always on. I had to go in and fiddle with the settings til it would stop loading. As I don’t use that anymore , I cannot be specific to how I stopped it.

This game has voice chat? Must be nice having friends.

There is NO work around to disable the ingame voice chat. It is NOT active at any time unles you click on the mic icon to turn it on.

I have yet to have it turned on when I first load up the game in Dalaran or anywhere else ingame. also the message you see even when changing regions does NOT appear everytime, ONLY if you have it turned on does it do that.

Unplug your headphones

Pretty sure it’s voice chat that makes hearthing to Dal so annoying. Hit my Dal hearthstone then go do other stuff for awhile. Takes forever. And when I finally get to Dal I have messages about being disconnected and reconnected to voice chat. I don’t get that in other zone changes.

Then you probably need to update your drivers. If you don’t do that regularly you’re hindering your PC/Laptop yourself. It has little, if anything, to do with the game.
