We all remember the South Park episode about how you can’t kill that which has no life. Well that’s exactly what time gating does it keeps those that have no life from becoming too powerful.
As a casual I can understand this but also a person who pays to play this game I feel like people should be able to play how they want. Not everyone is meant to do everything in the game.
I personally don’t mind that their are those who can do mythic raids and have better gear.
But that’s just my opinion
Time gating doesn’t help, period.
So what you’re saying is, Blizz shouldn’t timegate things that have no effect on player power?
That is the theory.
The reality is that it ends up annoying almost all of the player types that enjoy WoW.
Too often with this game, the sins of the few end up impacting the many when the devs try to mitigate things they can never control anyway.
It’s like a drug dealer trying to manage a customer’s addiction by selling him drugs in set amounts at set times. That’s just not going to help with the user’s addiction in any meaningful way.
It’s Blizzard’s solution to what they considered a problem. The no-life, as you so lovingly described them, would clear all the content that they wanted to, and then would unsub until something new was out.
What Blizzard was missing from this whole equation is that this kind of behavior started around Cataclysm, where the end game content started to become less and less pleasant.
So, rather than trying to make the repeatable content enjoyable and fun to do, they decided that they will dictate how fast everyone consumes the content. It’s entirely Blizzard’s go-to mentality of designing systems to solve their problems, rather than going for the harder fought victories, and the game suffers for it.
There will ALWAYS be players who will have an advantage over others. Time gating serves no purpose other than the devs having control over how and when the players consume the content.
It’s not a player benefit, it’s a dev benefit.
Hey but now people can unsub until flying and catch up mechanics are in
In my head, there’s a Southern Baptist choir belting out a super long, up-beat “AAAAAAH-MEEEEEEEEN”.
Time gating and rng is just a way of keeping people subbed longer end of story, what they don’t realize people will stay if there is content to enjoy and do at their own pace. Time gating will cost them subs. It’s like your boss yelling at you for not working hard enough, you then think screw it I will take my time now, but if that same boss praised you! you would work harder.
I’ve been arguing that for a while now, and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t considered it. Why play now when a few patches from now Blizz will cave on a lot of anti-fun things (cough ripcord)
The sad reality is that time gating stretches out content that is too thin. There are a LOT of players who will never sense this, and thus, stay subbed to play the content, at the software’s dictated pace. Nothing is wrong in their eyes, or at least, wrong enough to unsub.
A popular solution for players who DO sense that their play time is artificially managed by the software.
I did this for the third season of BfA… hated visions, the corruption system… just all of it.
This is precisely why I will only buy one month of game time at a go. It may always be a smart time to drop out for a while.
the only thing I have an issue being behind such a long time gate is the soulbind system. The raid and mythic+ have opened, let us choose from all our soulbinds and have them nearly to bottom at this point. If it is another six weeks until i get bonesmith heirmir i will be really sad.
I don’t blame you in the slightest, and that’s probably why they keep trying to bribe players to sub for six months with free mounts/cosmetics.
The sad thing is that the visions and corruptions COULD have been great…if they had just listened to players and not arbitrarily held them back with stupid timegates.
Once it was actually UNLOCKED (and if they had just gotten rid of the stupid vessels needed) it was a lot more tolerable. Also it’s hillarious to me that they’re making the same mistake with covenants that they did with corruption. They had to cave then, they’ll cave here eventually too.
Adult who have an IQ high enough to manage their own time properly here. No time gating isnt good for anything other than raids. Its been an awful experience this launch due to the time gating and torghast/maw which are just designed time sink loops more than they are designed as enjoyable content.
I am 100% sure because how SL launch is going, im not preordering or playing launch moving forward for wow. Id rather buy into an xpac a year late and be able to just play the game at my own pace, and my own pace is significantly slower than most people, aside from maybe one day a week i go HAM on wow, which i cant now for that one day.
Imagine how this game would have went if you all time gated quests in classic, we would all have never heard of WOW if they had done that as no one would have stuck around.
It’s a tragecomedy at this point.
Every single problem that the larger player base is talking about is not even news. Not in the slightest.
You can trace everything players hate all the way back to beta feedback.
Just like the past three expansions, the development process does not have the time necessary to change core things while they are in development. By the time beta players get their hands on software, only the most egregious game-breaking bugs receive attention. The myriad conceptual problems with the design always make it live. There’s never enough time to truly incorporate beta feedback.
And it’s getting seriously old.
-Did all the weekly, dailies. Got Renowned and Soul Ash to current caps. Can’t get anymore Renown / Soul Ash, guess I’ll wait 'til next week to get more.
-Plays another game in the meantime. Gets really into said game.
-New week, new caps comes around in WoW. “Naw, think I’ll keep playing other game instead”.
-Another week comes. Still would rather put time in other game.
-Yet ANOTHER week comes. Still haven’t got burnt off the other game. “Oh yeah, WoW. Think I rather keep playin this other game instead, rathar than keep forking over $15 a month.” Unsubs.
Yeah, this is what happens when things are gated.
So you’re going to go play a subpar MMO instead?
Naw, gonna play a game that keeps me invested rather than one that wants me not to.
