The use of the light requires faith or willpower through the light, and yet…disc uses both void and the light. And I don’t think using the void would be considered very faithful to be honest.
I always just say it is… player character things
The PC Priests can use both magics. Even in live.
It’s not just disc too.
Holy still has Mind Control, a Shadow Spell. And Shadow can use Power Word: Shield.
faith doesn’t need to be exclusive, you can (and probably do) have faith in many different things. “the light” and “the void” aren’t sentient beings, that are going to judge or get jealous. in fact it seems that neither has ANY sort of inherent moral or value systems beyond what the followers impose on it themselves (for example, arthas was more than capable of wielding the light to murder hundreds of innocent people during the culling of stratholme, “the light” didn’t care.)
the light and the void are simply different types of energy… energy that tends to react badly to each other sure, but that just means you need to be careful when wielding both, not that you can’t, or even that you shouldn’t.
now the CHURCH of the light might have a thing or two to say about it theologically, but thats an issue with the mortal followers, not with the light itself.
How are Shadow Lightforged Draenei Priest a thing? Or undead Holy Priests?
Idk if there’s a lore reason, but my Lightforged Draenei Disc Priest PoV (I know) on the matter is that a light will always cast a shadow. She has seen how a Naaru can become darkened, and rather than fearing this force, she’d rather learn what it is about so as to not be consumed by her own ‘shadow’.
Honestly, most priest lore checked out with Legion, where the myriad diverse beliefs of numerous cultures were idiotically boiled down to Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla.
Priest of Elune? Nope! Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla.
You like Voodoo? Can that be expressed as Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla instead?
Pandaren! August Celestials, right? Wrong! Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla.
What’s that? You like the Sun? That doesn’t sound like Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla.
The Naaru? Well that’s just chocolate and vanilla.
Blizzard wasn’t going to let some uppity “diverse culture and belief systems” class ruin its happy funtime Artifact and Class Hall jamboree, so here we are.
Gameplay mechanics don’t equate to lore.
Can you imagine if the Crusades were in a game? Everyone would say it doesn’t make sense with the established lore.
They have faith, they’re just not completely devoted like a Paladin or Holy Priest might be.
We’ve seen that the Light isn’t exactly super picky about who it lends its power to.
Iirc the very original justification for UD priests in general was “they willed it hard enough so it works”, making using the Light a function of willpower.
Most of Azeroths Priest societies preach a balance between Light and Shadow.
I’m pretty sure Velen himself tells Anduin in a book there is no Light without Shadow. Anduin even uses Shadow Magic to escape SI:7 Agents in Pandaria.
It’s not a gameplay mechanic, Discipline is a spec and it’s described as such, controlling shadow and light, this is lore. Alonsus Faol is a Discipline Priest from the priest’s class hall in Legion, and he talks a lot about it.
Priest’s shadow does not come exclusively from the void, actually, Discipline has only one spell that is related to the void, which is the Mindbender/Shadowfiend. All the other spells are related to death, something similar DKs use as shadow magic.
Dude you’re replying to a post that’s four years old.
These necros are getting ridiculous.
