How strong is Thalyssra?

I mean, almost everyone thought that she was this super-powerful mysterious ancient mage with wicked secret powers, knowing things few mortals alive dream of, and many horde players were really happy she was joining them.

BUT in her first mission for her new allies, she is struggling hard in her magic bubble to block a few worgen attacks, and tells everyone to RUN the moment she sees Jaina Proudmoore?? ‘We cannot fight her, run, run!’ Like, what the heck? And now she is apparently AWOL throughout the expansion pretty much except for 1 recent appearance?

I would say she could recognize her raw power and realized Jaina could possible best her in a lengthy mage battle, moreover she could have picked up on subtle looks of fear on Rokkon or Zul whom may have seen her before in battle. At least that is my head-cannon.

I believe Thalyssra is indeed strong but not overthetopOP as other characters like Tyrande or Malfurion. Of course things will always depend on the current story/plot.

It could’ve been a strategic move. Remember, Thalyssra is in unfamiliar territory - And knows that Jaina is in familiar surroundings. Surroundings that she could use to her advantage - And turn against Thalyssra. Just like Occuleth had done to one of his students with the gravity field.
Thalyssra is a master primarily of arcane, whereas Jaina is a master primarily of Frost. Both have potential of other magics, but those are their strong suits. And fighting Jaina in a one on one battle, wasn’t their objective. It was a prison-break mission.
And why should she compromise for the team who would abandon her to fulfil the mission at hand? I mean, Thalyssra’s got much to tend to back in Suramar: rebuilding (Of what was outside the bubble , and what was damaged in their war against the Legion) / reclaiming their Kingdom - and readjusting their kingdoms relationship in terms with the Horde and surely much more.

As a general rule the horde characters seem weaker than their Alliance counterparts. Varian handed Garrosh his butt in Wolfblood. Malfurion owned Saurfang in A Good War and Sylvanas seemed to be struggling with him. Hell even though he got wounded, Genn still had the victory in his tussle with Sylvanas. Genn was owning Nathanos in Stormheim.

Come to think of it, I cant remember the last time an notable Alliance character and a notable Horde character tussled and the Horde character came out on top unless it involved some cheap shot on the Horde characters part.

Likely very.

at the time I interpreted it as Thalyssra saying

“We don’t have TIME to fight her”

and I was like, yeah ok the worgen and guards are still on our tail.

But since then theyve shown Jaina as so ridiculously powerful for no clearly defined reason that I no longer doubt she could handle Thalyssra, the champion, Rok’han, Talanji and Zul all at once, just because the writing paints her as THAT strong.

Well, even though gameplay may not always reflect the lore…more often than not, Jaina is able to wipe the ground with several dozen high-level Horde champions during the siege, isn’t she?

So a single champion and a few sidekick NPCs would be even less likely to beat her. Jaina is said to be one of the toughest bosses this expansion. Even now, as far as I know, many guilds on both sides are struggling very hard to beat her.

bro, jaina’s skills are defined by frost, she didn’t even need to fight herself only to buy enough time until stormwind forces surround and kill the prisoners.

it was THE ALLIANCE CAPITAL.
jaina had everything at her advantage there.
i still think that jaina could take thalisra 1v1.
thalyssra greatest strength is her shield. did she manage to do something impressive at the level of ellisand?

She was losing the fight against the Horde PC’s which is why she teleports away. She say something like “No, it can’t end here”. I don’t think she went into the fight expecting to actually kill the players, just to slow them and stop them from attacking the retreating fleet. As for difficulty, she didn’t last a lockout which is kinda rare these days.

I don’t think there is a character that can stand up to Jaina 1v1 at this point. I wonder what their plan with her going forward is. She’s going to be very difficult to write around if she stays this strong.

Thalyssra is also skilled in time magic which we don’t see much of in WoW.

that is easy blizzard needs to either nerf her, buff someone in the horde or just form a team of 2 or more.

can she still do that without the eye of amanthul?

but who the hell i am kidding? power levels in wow are a joke. they will think in a cool moment and write around it.

She was able to without the eye when we first find her. She froze the guard that was chasing her and we killed him after breaking the spell. She wasn’t on the level that Ellisand was though.

I hope we see more of her in the Azshara raid/patch. She was great in Legion, but BfA leaves much to be desired.

I never understood the big deal.

Thalyssra never seemed all that powerful. Hardly a counter part to Jaina.

Jaina was the leader of the 6. She had access to unparalleled magic knowledge, as well her access to powerful objects. Jaina also has been using that magic offensively since the Third War.

Up until recently, Thalyssra was a Highborn noble woman. She gets stabbed in the back and chucked into the sea. She may have been first Arcanist - but she was not the Grand Magistrix. And she only recently began to use her magical abilities in combat.

Yes, the Alliance has all the super powerful mega heroes and the Horde just has highly skilled normal people with magical abilities. That is not new.

Thalyssra seems to be sent to Stormwind because her people are skilled in deception, stealth, and barriers. I believe Rommath would be the mage you might send if you wanted a fire fight.

I think the problem is that the Horde’s greatest champions are weak in comparison to the Alliance. That is just a fact. I am glad they have the Horde point this out. A Good War goes a long way to show that the Horde is pretty screwed unless they have Sylvanas running around the battlefield herself.

I mean look at it this way, Jaina is a super powerful mage, granted we know she is capable as well but she is in a city full of enemy troops and multiple power houses in the alliance bastion of power best case scenario she goes toe to toe with Jaina to discover they are evenly matched and then has to deal with Genn Alleria Anduin and a host of other strong characters with an army marching behind them. Worst case scenario she finds out she isn’t evenly matched and now the chance to escape is wasted. Everyone gives so much flak on this moment saying it makes Thalyssra look weak but if you look at the situation it makes her look smart enough to know she can’t defeat the majority of the alliance in their city by herself

Zul also acknowledges she can kill us, and says that’s why he set Stormwind on fire.

Thalyssra is the Captain America to Jaina’s Thor.

It wasn’t that long ago that Thalyssra was a near cripple that depended on the adventurer to keep her fed with mana, lest she Withered. From her own depictions, she was thrown out of Suramar by mere guards. So she wasn’t that hot a mage even before she was cut off from the Nightwell.

Based on what we have see in Suramar, Thalyssra probably has a focus on one of the following schools of magic.

Transmutation spells change the properties of a creature, object, or environment. They might turn an enemy into a harmless creature, bolster the strength of an ally, make an object move at the caster’s command, or enhance a creature’s innate healing abilities to rapidly recover from injury.

Considering chronomancy falls under the Transmutation school, I think Elisande had a focus in this school.

Abjuration spells are protective in nature, though some of them have aggressive uses. They create magical barriers, negate harmful effects, harm trespassers, or banish creatures to other planes of existence.

We see Thalyssra use a lot of defensive spells, but rarely offensive ones. Which might be telling that she is an abjurer.

Enchantment spells affect the minds of others, influencing or controlling their behavior. Such spells can make enemies see the caster as a friend, force creatures to take a course of action, or even control another creature like a puppet.

Considering her research with the Withered, which is essentially just finding some weak willed creatures to more easily mind control, this could be telling of an enchantment background.

I think it is more than possible, considering her age, that she has some familiarity, or at least a working knowledge of all schools of magic. However, I think I would believe Enchantment to be her main focus.

We have not seen her do much in the way of Chronomancy, despite the nature of the Nightwell to be related to time. Considering I am already substituting the undefined nature of magic in WoW with D&D magic already, I think we can assume that Thalyssra and Nightborne in general, owe their magical prowness to the Transumtative nature of the Nightwell itself, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the school of magic a Nightborne uses is Transmutation.

It is possible that she is an Abjurer, however, Abjuration is the main school of magic a Spell Breaker would focus is. Within this school you have Counterspell, Sheild, Spell Steal, and mage armor. It’s very unlikely that an ageless abjurer would be afraid of a human mage, even if that mage was exceedingly powerful like Jaina.

In addition to that point, Thalyssra main contribution in Legion was her Withered Army, which leaves me to believe that her main school of focus is Enchantment, which would make sense. Thalyssra could be immensely powerful, but in the face of a strong willed creature, like Jaina, enchantment spells are next to useless. So it is not so much that Jaina out classes Thalyssra as a wizard, but rather Thalyssra is out of her element when it comes to spell duels.

I’ve wanted a Jaina vs Rommath mage duel for years. Just… not in this expansion. Please, please, not in this expansion.
