How Sharding is Antithetical to MMOs

Why don’t you just move your RP activities elsewhere like Boralus. People made a fuss about that city and asked for a bunch of adjustments for RP purposes and it isn’t being used.

Because we shouldn’t have to.

You can’t just uproot and move an entire population who is used to RPing in the major faction hub overnight. Stormwind is more easily accessible as well, it’s the hub for RP for a reason.

Boralus is less accessible. The point of Stormwind being the hub is accessibility.

“Just move” isn’t a solution.

Sounds like a problem with the server stability baseline, would rather they fixed that instead of ruining the MMO experience.

Because Stormwind’s hub nature and various locales make it far easier to RP in, to find RP, and so on. Everyone gravitates there, by design. Sorry but we’re not moving our ROLEPLAY on the ROLEPLAY server just to make the city less laggy for people posting their auctions.

That’s cool that you have access to Blizzard’s internal data. Got a source for this?

Internal Data? No.

Watching city raids cause world instances to crash? Yep.

It’s my opinion that Role Players are Blizzard’s most loyal playerbase when it comes to WoW, they’re the ones most passionate about the lore that they put out, and they’re the ones that take the time to read the quest text and get invested in the world they create. They’re the ones that make the game that they created feel more alive and utilize the spaces they made.

Sharding and splintering the communities from being able to interact is causing irreparable harm and causing them to get fed up.

Please turn sharding off, Blizzard!

This isn’t just about RP; familiarity between players and guilds is important for a healthy community. When the majority of people are pugging in group finder and doing a lot of cross-realm activity, there’s no connection to their peers, and shallow or mean interactions are way too abundant.

I started playing at the end of wrath on Mannoroth, and I played with my realm—a lot. Nowadays it’s all random people if you’re into the pug life; it almost feels like you’re wasting your time. The ultimate reward isn’t the gear that is going to be irrelevant in a few months – it’s the friends you can make. You can hardly build any relations if you have this massive pool of crossed realms to play with.

I think sharding might not be as big of a dealbreaker for players who just like the content, but it’s one huge step away from a healthy community. When you pick a realm, you should see all the players on it wherever they are. Sure, that means smaller realm capacity to not overload them, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing - too many players and you get lost in them.

I can appreciate the original intention of sharding, many of us remember the darker days all too well. That’s all well and good. But.

New solutions should be explored, certainly and especially with particular consideration to RP realms. But in the shorter term, we need better management of the Sharding system. It still being up in SW is asinine.

For arguably my favorite launch in 15+ years, my largest complaint was that it was also the least Massively Multi-player online game feeling of all of them!

By all means, strategize and create new solutions. But the ship is taking on water, plug some holes in the meantime. Please, we just want to enjoy the game with our friends and communities.

It is a problem caused by having a full server.

Too be quite honest, Sharding systems were mostly introduced as a bandaid to large servers while also acting as a psudo-server merging for low-pop servers.

Since server merging is a giant red flag to investors that the game might not be doing too well.

People play on full servers to see other players though.

There are a billion dead servers to play on if we cared about stability

You have plenty of people here telling you the reasons and you’re being belligerent.

The bottom line is that we are on an RP server, and the phasing and sharding is severing the reason why people are on an RP server to begin with. There’s no room for debate on whether it should or shouldn’t be there, it simply shouldn’t because it is limiting the experience. End of discussion.

Stop feeding the troll, y’all. Not worth it.

this, my friends  no need to waste energy on someone who doesn’t care and seems to just be here for an argument

Not really true. Blizzard has told people to move to RP servers to avoid CRZ. So you have a lot of people on RP servers who have no desire to RP but who would like to be able to actually open a mailbox without lag.

Sharding is literally 90% of the reason I can’t get my Wrath of the Jailer done… I join a group and suddenly the objective straight up VANISHES… I try to solo it and half the time it’s that Karen mawsworn with her ****ing doggo… maybe when I’m M+ or even M0 geared, I can actually clear it consistently… or at least until they scrap this sharding nonsense that is literally ruining so much of the game…
