How realistic is it to be able to just be a resto druid. And JUST a resto druid?

I’m genuinely in a position where I am falling for “paralysis by analysis” overthinking choosing a main but the reality is this choice is pretty significant. I’m completely stuck.

For druid I only like resto. I had to play balance to get carried through a m+14 key and I despised every single moment of it. If anything is going to send me packing back to FFXIV it’s that spec.

I quite literally cannot imagine a world where I’d be happy if I had to “fill” another role. Bear druid I tried, it’s not fun. Feral is not fun either, I like cat WEAVING on resto but just being a cat is like pain.

So I began to write down what I enjoy and the list is all messed up.

Healers: Druid > Monk > Shaman.

Ranged dps: Elemental Shaman.

Tank: Brewmaster.

Melee dps: Enhancement = Wind Walker

But then I peel apart that list.

  1. Druid

= obvious choice for m+15, I’ll probably get into groups I have no right to be in on druid. I also love resto druid, I love love love love resto druid. Cat weaving with DoT management on it is some of the most fun I’ve had in ages on healers. I truly enjoy this spec too much.

Like to put it another way, the healing on resto druid is so fun I don’t want to heal in FFXIV right now at all. I love it that much. And considering I’ve healed in FFXIV since 2.0 days; that’s the biggest compliment I can give. I’d play this spec into the ground happily.

But as soon as I need to swap to any other spec I immediately want to just alt +f4 out of the game and open up FFXIV. I can’t do it man. I’ve tried to do balance on the PTR even. I can’t do it. I just can’t do it dood.

My druid is genuinely a 1 spec pony. I love that 1 spec but don’t do me like that and ask me to play other specs.

  1. Monk

= Problem is I also LOVE mistweaver monk, but specifically it’s fistweaving build. I do not like the ranged essence font build-- that build is not for me. But that fistweave build? Oh my Gossshhhhh, I love it it’s so enjoyable.

But the problem is people seem to HATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE fist mistweavers. Like big big big no bueno. If I wanted a way to get kicked from every raid group and every m+15 group this is the BEST way to get that.

Ultimately monk is massively unwanted in general outside of brewmaster. Brewmaster might guarantee me a slot in pug m+15. But brewmaster is probably massively unwanted in raid content because it seems everyone and their mother wants to be one of the 2 raid tank slots.

But being a brewmaster is also a shoe in for m+15.

  1. Shaman

= obvious choice for raiding, probably will get into raid groups I have no right to be in.

But while I REALLY DO enjoy elemental + enhancement. They have been pretty resoundingly stated to be unwanted.

  1. Paladin…?

= Seems decently solid for raid and m+ on holy and prot. But my issue is the specs seem boring as far as I can tell. I saw a glimmer of light playthrough and I wanted to scream at my screen-- to me that’s the same level of agony as guardian druid. I can’t do it. I’d run screaming.

Now my big underlying issue.

Next expac isn’t alt friendly.

The next expansion is NOT alt friendly. I thought it might be at first but then I looked into Torgast for stygian, getting legendaries (grindy and expensive) and gearing up across raids and m+ and so many other aspects of it.

At present I don’t think it’s even viable to have more than 1 alt properly geared and ready. And even that I think is pushing it.

Let’s say that I am consistently doing m+15 keys on my resto druid. Now I need to cycle back and go m+15 keys on my resto shaman. Now I need to cycle back and go m+15 keys on my mistweaver monk.

This is all under the delusional premise that PUGs would be as eager to pick up my resto shaman or mistweaver monk for m+15 as my resto druid. And that is delusional. And after being kicked during a LEVELING dungeon I have no faith that people will “just be understanding and take it”. Nopers, I don’t buy that for a second. People want proven reliable classes for pugs.

But back to the point of alts:
At what point does that become absolutely insane to do? I don’t want to dump 30 hours a week farming stygian across my 900 alts.

If you don’t raid top 50, it doesn’t matter.

Big mood. I get that way when I want to watch or play something new and my brain is just “But what if its bad tho?” and I freeze.

Just do what you find fun. Yes this is a mmo but your fun is important

Aye, I agree 100%.

Sadly for me I’m spread out.

I’d combine [1] enhancement shaman [2] resto druid [3] brewmaster monk [4] elemental shaman together if I could.

Plus for me I think the most fun is just being wanted / desired in a group. I don’t want to be left to the curb and basically picked over because I chose the “wrong” class.

True but right now I just wanna get into groups and enjoy my time here. I’m genuinely at the point where I can’t spend hours trying to find a group for content. I just wanna get in the content, hammer it out, and get out with the fun / experience.

I ve been playing spriest without ever touching the repulsive healing specs so you should be fine.

If a tryhard whines about you they are often the problem, decent people dont worry about builds being different if you are good.

To the title question and the idea that you would ever be required to switch to a different spec/role… just join a different group that isn’t full on healers.

You mentioned you had to switch to balance once because you were getting carried. Unless you plan to just get carried all the time (?) this isn’t really an issue. Just join groups that need a healer.

Is it seeming like it is reasonable for me to get into all forms of content as just a healer though?

PUGs seem to want tanks.

Many guilds seem to be overloaded on healers…

It’s really quite a strange situation to be in sadly.

Unless you are incredibly impatient and can’t stand to wait a few minutes for a m+ group, you’ll be fine. Yes, tanks are in higher demand, but there’s been plenty of times where a group with a tank is waiting for a healer.

Raids are hit or miss. Groups don’t pop up as often, but you’ll be able to find one that needs a healer without too much trouble.

I take in a point not to pug, I’m in a casual raiding guild, as long as you know what you’re doing its fine there’s no pressure. For the few Mythic+ that I have done I did as Feral and boy did I suck at it, but that’s fine they don’t care as long as we clear it at some point. We have one basic rule and that is ignore the timer, if we make it fine if we don’t we still get loot at the end and TR in the weekly chest.

The same goes for raiding, as long as you know your role, it doesn’t matter how you do, we’ll get the job done eventually. Surprising when we do server first kills and often clear heroic before everyone else. We make room for everyone, a lot of us have dual specs. Only our tanks have the same 4 people, everyone else can move around.

lots of people including Supa are leaning Resto - decent video but TLDR:

Resto has it all - PVE/PVP/BGs/Solo WQs/World PVP - not going to be a leader in any of it but quite good across entire game - I have never been a healer - EVER - but may try resto out in pre-patch to see how it feels

Yes I’d say you’d be fine.

In my previous guild we had a lady who was commited to healers, like literally it was her bread and butter and she loved it.

She did really well. Regular M11/M12, Heroic level and start of Mythic raid 3/12 and she was able to do visions rather well both on her Restoration Shaman and Restoration Druid.

On the flip side healing stresses me out. I have a great respect for people who do it.

Play w/e you enjoy.

Also why would you have to play anything to get carried? We can carry a afk buyer thru a +23

This…

Its why in all MMOs I’ve played its either Tank or DPS -as a Tank I always had a love affair with a healer or two because once they learn ‘their Tanks’ playstyle it was amazing what could be done.

Admittedly this was more true in Everquest where the min/max approach was impossible because no game mechanic numbers were ever published - WoW is extremely cookie cutter - combat is like one massive IF/Then Statement and highly predictable

OP - Resto is the way…

MY MAN!!! I watched some of this video and I’m already vibing with what he is saying so hard.

I’ve been fangirling over the necrolord ability and dang.

Subbed instantly to Supa. That’s superb.

Yeah, this is making me feel more comfortable for being a disgusting 1 tick pony.

Awwww, this makes me sad. Probably for the best you arent attached, though, given negative opinion people have of Ferals is going to get worse.

To answer your questions though, i can speak through experience: it is entirely possible to play resto druid and only resto druid. I know this because I’ve lived it. In my (admittedly short) time playing WoD, it was the only spec I played. In Legion, it was the only spec i played. I leveled, solo, in resto druid, largely in part because I also did not care for Balance at the time.

I was able to complete all the open world content, all the heroic dungeons, and LFR without problems.

Later, in BFA, i once again leveled as Resto. I started doing M+ (exclusively as resto) up to very small keys (no more than +10). I also quite handily PUGed AotC Ghuun with it.

Now having said that, if you hard force only the one spec, you are going to have a harder time in open-world content. Resto survives open-world very well, but it is slooooow compared to having a viable off-spec. Having tasted the freedom, I do not think I could ever go back to questing as Resto.

But based in your post, you seem primarily interested in group activities like Raid and M+. Its also possible to be a one-spec pony for those. Its arguably the best thing to do if you can get groups consistantly. For M+, healers are in less demand than tanks, but they are always needed, and nobody is going to look at a resto druid in M+ and think “ew, no.” Raids are way better. Healers are absolutely the most in-demand for raids, given that larger raid groups require more of them than tanks.

I honestly dont even know what you’re all that worried about.
