How powerful was Kael'thas?

Not as powerful as Azeroth’s “true king” evidently!

Now correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t Kael’thas also the paragon to fire magic as well? It such a shame that he just got villain batted and loot piñatad. So many missed opportunities that Activision Blizzard missed with Kael’thas. Especially him VS Jaina. His replacements just don’t match up. It is just sad that we have Lor’themar, Rommath, and … Aethas (sigh) as three leaders combined yet STILL do not hold a candle to Kael’thas.

That just tells you how much a mistake Activision Blizzard made over Kael’thas. Lor’themar is a ranger … why? We already have Sylvanas, we needed a mage to fill the gap. To me Lor’themar is just a handed down Sylvanas, she even has undead necromancer powers. What does Lor’themar have that makes him unique? Seriously, what does he have? Kael’thas was unique in so many ways. While Rommath is cool, he just doesn’t hold a sliver of a candle, he is just a very, very, VERY handed down Kael’thas. Aethas … Aethas … just a huge, huge disappointment, going to leave it at that.

This is why villain batting a character out of nowhere is just wrong on so many levels. Arthas worked out because he wasn’t even batted. We played as Arthas and went through his downfall, and a very, very well written and very, very well done downfall at that. Just batting a hero to villain out of nowhere brings confusion and pain to the fans. Illidan walked the line but was always in it for his people, and Legion finally fixed the mistake of villain batting him.

I am not even a huge fan of Yrel getting the bat. She’s a perfect replacement for Velen. Velen’s story is finished, it is time for him to be replaced, no offense to the fans. He just stood there and watched Tyrande, and Anduin debate about sending troops to Darkshore not saying anything, that is how much his story is concluded. Time to bring in a more active Draenei, and Yrel was perfect. Too bad she’s going deus vult. It would have been nice if she was usurped in the AU by the Lightbound, and she brings a band of rebellious Draenei over to the MU somehow.

I was always so disappointed that he was a villain in BC. He was one of my favorite characters. They should go ahead and bring him back, sure he attacked Silvermoon last time he was there, but whatever. It would be interesting if Horde had someone like Jaina.

Kael’thas wasn’t villain-batted out of nowhere. He was leader of a bunch of elves indulging in fel. There are a billion examples of where that path leads. His outcome was entirely in keeping with the consequences of recklessly consuming fel power.

The only thing that was incoherent about it was the lack of an overt reaction by the Horde NPC’s, who technically all went into Outland thinking the blood elves there were their allies, only to spontaneously hand out quests to kill them as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Kael’thas was comparable to Jaina, but I think Rommath is more in line with Umbric. I don’t think he has the potential to reach Kael’thas’ level, ever.

Kael’thas: I’m a joke to you?

The fact that something is the reasonable conclusion of preceding story choices doesn’t mean that there aren’t other paths that could have been taken (that’s the magic of fiction!) or that it was satisfying or served the narrative constructively.

Why were you disappointed? He has always shown to have a (fittingly enough, since he wouldn’t survive otherwise) ruthless streak and a cold single-mindedness in his quest to sate his (and his people’s hunger) as well as increase his personal power.

Even Illidan seems awed by the prince’s and the sin’dorei’ zeal.

Honestly, the revisionism regarding Kael’thas astounds me.

His character in TBC was very much in-keeping with who he became at the end of Frozen Throne.

Honestly not sure why I would need to explain that I was disappointed a character I liked existed for a single expansion as a villain that you don’t even interact with before becoming a loot pinata, twice. It seems pretty obvious to most I would think.

Beyond that, if blizzard keeps killing its morally interesting characters it will just be a bunch of Anduins running around and what a boring story that will lead to…

But isn’t Jaina just there to be the angry battered wife mouthpiece for the Alliance players who don’t care about Sylvanas? Where does the reciprocity of bitterness end?!

Rommath IS a San’Layn… I mean, just look at his outfit!

And everyone knows he’s still loyal to Kael’thas.
He’s ploting to bring him back, mark my words.

No? Jaina and Sylvanas don’t interact like ever. I don’t even think they’ve ever actually directly spoken to each other once. Genn is a better representative for that.

You can say that about many characters, though especially during this era when Blizzard was still figuring out storytelling.

It seems pretty obvious to most I would think.

Ignoring the thinly veiled attack - it isn’t obvious since there can be several arguments made about the storytelling during TBC, varying from direction to quality.

After WC3 ended, I wouldn’t have been surprised if Kael’thas was the strongest surviving Mage on the planet. I know that honor goes to Jaina, but I don’t think she was powerful as he was, and wasn’t stronger until after his death.

It’s a real shame they made Kael’thas into a Raid Boss.

Just another reason I want to see a WoW 2 that is a reboot taking place from the end of WC3:TFT and this time doing things right. Like NOT making Kael’thas into a raid boss.

You’re right. I meant the Horde in general and substituted incorrectly.

I guess? I mean…she accomplished all her goals (raided the city, killed Rastkhan, got her troops out), and we failed in all of ours (city got raided, Rastakhan died, Alliance got away, Jaina survived).

So…sweet victory?

Most powerful Mages excluding guardians is probably something like this imo:

  1. Azsahra
  2. Elisande
  3. Jaina
  4. Khadgar
  5. Kalecgos
  6. Antonidas
  7. Kael’thas
  8. Thalyssra
  9. Aethas Sunreaver
  10. Modera

Off the top of my head, it’s probably something like that.

She changed her goal at the end and tried to trap and kill us. Instead, we beat her so badly she had to retreat.

We had a fight with Jaina Proudmoore and we won. I don’t understand what’s hard about this.

Because she should have died.

To be fair, I’d amend that list as follows.

  1. Azshara/Guardians of Tirisfal
  2. Khadgar, Jaina, Kael’thas, Elisande, Antonidas
  3. Kalecgos, Thalyssra.
  4. Aethas, Modera
  5. Player Character Mages
