I’ve been thinking of transferring to ED because it’s got a pretty high pop and a fairly even Horde to Alliance ratio (that combo seems very hard to find, besides on ED) but my concern is that it’s an RP server.
I like seeing people RP but it’s not something I do well myself so I’m wondering how much it is done in normal activities?
I mainly want to join a PvP guild if I transfer.
Stormrage was another server I was thinking about since its very active but it’s like 95% alliance from what I can tell so that would be less enjoyable for wPvP.

I was like you back in MoP I came to ED because it was RP (even though I didn’t RP). I wanted to be around players that were into the lore and WoW themes. I think I was trying to scratch my DnD itch.
Server was great I joined a wpvp guild (PoL, BBV) and started RPing even (D20, i think Destrey may have lead some it been awhile). Left for WrA after warmode killed Wpvp and ED got flooded with pvpbros that didn’t respect RP. Anyhow I came back because ED was a special server.
TLDR- if you respect RP and RP ruleset you will be fine.
PS- get TRP3 addon it is cool to see peoples’ RP backstories.

It’s not a requirement to be honest. Just be mindful that there will be people conducting RP events and battles.
If you see even numbers, say 25 Horde v 25 Alliance fighting it out in a remote zone like Blasted Lands or Northrend just know its RPPvP, and its glorious. The most fun I’ve had in WoW since transferring from a regular pvp server.
People also put up bounties and guilds go to war but with RP to spice it up. If you like ganking randos or lfg camping a quest assault, this server might not be the right fit.
This place has the same quality pvp you will find on BH or Tich but with a little backstory to it

You’ll be fine, just as long as you respect the RP and it’s rules. I actually joined primarily as a PvPer back in MoP but eventually I got into RP, so you never know if it’s something you’ll like eventually 
if you do not at least attempt to RP, I will find you and slay you. This hammer gonna getcha good son

There is not an abundance of rp’ing on this server. You’ll be fine joining it and focusing only on pvp.

Welcome to the server, Machined! Everyone else already answered your question, so I’ll just offer a warm welcome. 
Emerald Dream is great. The server culture is so zany. I tried to play on another server for a while, but I couldn’t do it because there is no community quite like Emerald Dream. I had to come back. I hope you get involved in the community somehow and have as much fun as we’re having!

I’d recommend giving it a try while you’re here. We’re not too snobish so be as tropey as you want. Honestly the server RP is the only reason I’ve kept my subscription up over the long content draughts Blizz dumped on this already mediocre expansion.
We’ve all interacted for years now so there’s a lot of ongoing plot threads full of political intrigue and unexpected friendships. Really adds to the whole gameplay experience.

So I joined ED not for the RP but for the WPvP. Up until recently I’ve never RPed. So it’s not necessary. Even the guild I’m in there will be guild or community wide RP events. I attend, I chat with friends like I normally would.
Recently the past few days I’ve found my self RP walking up to groups in cities tough where it’s clear something is going on and just join in. It’s just using more emotes and goofing around more freely. Imo.
So here’s my take, if you want to RP, ED has it.
If you don’t want to RP, ED has a lot of other great qualities.

The RP community here are all toxic, deranged people. Best thing to do is get a raid together and hunt them down when they do their dumb make-believe events.
The RP’ers here are awesome! Best RP’ers I have seen in WoW. Better then MG or WRA or any other RP server. All you have to do is be respectful. Even if you don’t RP people are chill. If you’re a good dude you will love it here. Anyone that says otherwise just ate moldy bread. 
Don’t mind Tallywix. He’s a toxic PvP bro who doesn’t even play on Emerald Dream anymore.
