How much of a DPS difference is 3 item levels?

I just am hoping I can get some kind of clear answer here.

Take resto druid or MW Monk “A” in full m+ weekly lockout gear.

Take resto druid or MW Monk “B” in full mythic+ raid gear. (Allegedly only 3 item levels higher.)

How much more superior will resto druid B be than A?

Depends on stats. Ilvl is meaningless.

The game used to be simpler where ilvl was an acceptable determination of upgrades / downgrades.

These days, it’s better to sim yourself.

Pretty much this

You could have an item 10ilvls lower and still be an upgrade if it has better secondary stats

3 ilvl’s worth of superiorness.

Wat

I am so confused.

So basically secondary stats >>>> item level? Okay well this is REALLY different from ffxiv

So how the hell am I meant to gear up lmao… this is really weird.

Item level has never been an acceptable determination of upgrades/downgrades.

It is a reflection of stat budget, that’s it.

How those stats interact with your spec and translate to dps is a completely separate topic.

Count the main stat difference and that’s your answer.

If same secondary stats then yes the higher ilvl piece is better

Your title is asking about DPS differences but lists healers as examples, so I’m going off the assumption you’re dpsing as a healer. Keep in mind that some healing specs are far stronger at dps than others, irrespective of gear.

Also, are those healers clones? Because if healer A doesn’t know their spec, has poor environmental awareness, doesn’t know mechanics, etc, then that ilvl is meaningless if healer B knows their spec, has good environmental awareness & knows mechanics.

I’m always baffled over the anxiety 3 ilvls creates when gameplay proficiency weighs so much more heavily & is often ignored.

3 ilvls is pretty low to have much significant impact in how you play, honestly their spec/class will matter more in that case.

but in general a lot of classes scale better with secondary stats, like DoT focused specs, that scale extremely well with haste.

so for example, if your best stats are haste > Crit and you have 2 items in your bags, #1 would still be better than #2 for your spec even though #2 is a higher item lvl.

    1. Serpentskin Splashers
      Item Level 153
      24 Armor
      +31 Intellect
      +52 Stamina
      +23 Critical Strike
      +41 Haste
    1. Faewoven Sandals
      Item Level 157
      26 Armor
      +32 Intellect
      +52 Stamina
      +46 Critical Strike
      +22 Mastery

If there is a big difference in item lvl/your not sure, it’s always better to just sim it to know which one is better

It depends on the level. For example, at 100, 15 levels is the difference between Normal and Heroic gear. That’s usually about a 20-25% upgrade.

M+ and raid. Focus on pieces that have better stats for your spec.

To me I always wanna DPS as a healer, I absolutely have the FFXIV mentality :x
I want to always be engaged and doing something, whether it is healing someone or busting faces. Being stagnant drives me insane.

To me yeah I am really looking at the healers that can do the most DPS that looks to be heavily PLD and DISC while resto druid does insanely good damage in m+ dungeons.

I will try and instead focus on becoming super effective in my role \o/

If you’re wanting to dps as a healer, your spec will definitely be the most significant choice. I’m not sure how SL looks for that, but hpally and resto druid did well in BFA M+. I’ve always loved disc priest and have heard good things about it in pre-patch, but that’s not really a good gauge for how it’ll be live in SL.

DPS seems to be more dependent on stats, spell choice and rotation, and talent choices.

If you’re looking for an active healer definetly play Disc priest, it heals by doing damage, it does have a pretty big learning curve though.

Holy paladin recently got reworked and their DPS rotation actually ooms them, so i wouldnt recommend HPal for now,.

if you want an engaging healer play Disc, it’s always a top-tier healing spec practically every expansion anyway and also has the benefit of being a ranged spec

People need to stop being obtuse and either answer the question or just hush.

Quit adding variables like differing spec and people helming it. Assume a person doing the same content pushing the same buttons in the same way as they normally would with the only difference being one has the same exact gear but at 3 ilvls higher and what numerically difference that translates to

Higher ilvl gives more stats.

For me oddly enough I really like melee playstyle which sucks.

I wish MW monk was better, but I saw their low damage and began to question why they are so bad in numbers NGL :s

If they aren’t the right stats I’m not wearing it. :man_shrugging:
