How much hate would a Hunter without a wolf get?

The main draw of Hunter to me is all the RPG aspects built into their class and especially surrounding their pet. If I were to roll a Hunter as my main I know I’d only ever want to use raptors, cats, and wind serpents (outside training skills) because those are what appeal to me personally. I’m just curious how much flak I’d catch for opting for something other than a wolf in group content.

I don’t think I ever had a raid leader complain about what pet the Hunter is using.
I know there is dps buffs, however not great enough for it to matter.

I could be wrong and the guilds I joined were awful, but to my recollection; I can’t recall a single time.

Very little hate from those worth paying attention to.

Wolf is good for fights you don’t have high uptime on pet damage, cat is best for fights where you have good uptime with pets, and wind serpent is good for fights the pet and party have to stay at range.

People who want to dictate how a Hunter can play should probably learn that.

Maybe my memory is wrong, but didn’t hunter pets just die to everything (while raiding) anyways?

Well as far as I know you wont have the wind serpent option. Raptors/Wolves/Cats had the highest dps after the attack speed normalization IIRC so I doubt you would get flak if you stayed in that lane

Not with proper attention from the Hunter, and proper training (the right resistances and +health).

Pre-ZG yes, but the highest rank of breath is available with ZG’s introduction. Cats highest personal DPS, wolves have lower individual DPS but the howl makes up for it.

If raptors get their bleed back they should be similar to cats or no?

So the best pvp pet is actually a level 37 rare cat named Broken Tooth because pre ZG it’s the only pet in the game with a 1.0 attack speed which is great for pushback on casters. It’s also great for BM due to the pet frenzy where they get 30% additional attack speed on crit. More little hits = more opportunities to proc frenzy = higher uptime on pet frenzy. They nerfed Lupos, who did shadow damage in vanilla and now does physical damage, so he’s not worth taking.

At the same time, bm is better earlier, marks later due to the pets not scaling at the cap and in some fights they’re actually detrimental (Geddon putting bomb on pets) and/or die nonstop. Which pet you take for solo world play or 5 mans isn’t really a big deal.

Thanks for the replies all, sounds like it’s not that big of a deal.

Pretty much, with 1.12 Lupos is physical.

That would take a debuff and be a waste of focus compared to claw. The health loss raptors suffer is also a consideration.

i just use BT

but raptors are better for pvp cause rogues!

I didn’t actually play hunter in vanilla I just had people telling me to get him when I got my beta invite. Then I tamed him and he did physical damage which made me sad. I wasn’t sure if it was a “bug” they fixed or if that actually changed in 1.12.

I’d still stick with BT/ZG bat for the 1.0 attack speed. Serpent Sting/Hunter’s Mark helps against rogues enough.

It was prior to 1.12, so it won’t be in Classic.

see i dont know enough about rogues in vanilla then, cause I was certain they could clear the poison since SS was a magic debuff or something and they couldnt the bleed cause its physical

They will get hate form min maxers, but others probably wouldn’t care if its not wiping them or pulling extra mobs.
