How Much DPS Loss if I don't do Engineering?

Title mostly speaks for itself. If I go Hunter, how much DPS are we talking about if I don’t take up Engineering?

Am I losing much for my single target DPS potential?

Thanks in advance!

Though I can’t answer that (sorry), a key thing you’ll be missing is your own crafted ammo. Hunter + engineer went really well together (if you use guns)

bump I would like to know too.

Not just the extra damage from bullets you craft but extra damage from bombs and dynamite! You also can feign death and use your goblin jumper cables to res the healer and be the saviour of the dungeon group

Single target DPS, as a hunter?

Basically nothing.

Engineering offers some burst AoE options but will have very little effect on your single-target DPS. Needing to buy ammo instead of crafting it will be less convenient, as people have mentioned.

Uh… 0. You don’t shoot with engineering. At most you’d throw dynamite at packs of mobs, but the damage is quite irrelevant after 60. You already have volley and multi shot; really not going to add much for this class. Engineering is nice to craft your own ammo, but it’s tradable. You can FD and pop jumper cables… but any raid is going to use a stone anyway. No one will care about your cables. You might get 1 guy back up faster (when they actually work), again, quite irrelevant. Engineering will slightly boost your AOE potential, but this is mostly a concern for melee classes.

its good to know you are aware how to jump start a car. I appreciate the advice.

you lose less than 7 dps by not being an engineer… except you’re a hunter, and hunters can’t fit bombs into their dps rotations, so they’d just be for AoE pulls

Some purposes of engineering in PvE are for Goblin Sapper Charges, which are instant cast aoe bombs that do quite decent damage considering - they are especially valuable on PvP servers for raiding guilds to kill other guilds and contest certain objects/world bosses because if you have a ton of people with engineering that use them you can instantly wipe out an entire raid nearly.

The other really important item is the Arcanite Dragonling which applies a debuff on bosses which is what you’ll be using it on and it’ll increase fire damage done per stack of it, so having tons of people with this is also very important.

There’s other things that you’ll want it for but these are some of the more important uses.

PFFT! You think I’m going to SS a healer? SS is my threat reset!

The amount of money it costs for extremely marginal dps gains by using engineering consumables really is not worth it in raids unless you’re part of some superguild that is explicitly trying to break speed records.

DPS was not a thing in vanilla just pick what you want and have fun. Unless you are part of that 1 percent that is going for world first but you have to think about the time it takes you to cast the bomb you also have to stop shooting on your char so i doubt it really makes that much of a difference.

yes, yes it was, did you even play? gear was so badly itemized that every little bit of DPS counted. bosses were simpler too, many were just hard DPS checks, you either burnt them down, or thye enrage and nuke you, vaelestraz, hakkar, golemagg, rag. even just instance boss were DPS checks.
