How much does server distance matter?

I would really like to play on Defias Pillager for HC WoW, but I live in the MST timezone. Is the ping going to be substantial enough that I could die from a situation I would’ve lived in if I was on Skull Rock?

Depends on your internet mostly iirc.

I would say you have equal chance of an issue like lag affecting you as you would playing on a closer server.

Used to play on EST servers while living on the West Coast. Never had an issue because of that really.

For PVE sub 200ms is fine.

for PVP you want as low as possible.

I think the differences are minimal. Your ISP is much more important than your server. But, because of the nature of hardcore, all it takes is one near death experience to play out that minimal difference in or out of your favor. And for that reason, I’d stick with the closer server. But if it means playing with friends or not, that’s a simple answer.

I’m in EST and I have definitely had waves of sudden bad, death-inducing lag while playing on Classic PST servers. I’ll be fine for a week, then have a day of intermittent unplayable lag there, then it will be fine for days again.

I have FIOS, am the only user, have wired internet, and no other games nor other internet sites I visit are affected: it’s just the WoW Classic PST servers that get like that sometimes.

Clearly, I’m putting all my eggs into Defias Pillager’s basket and going EST here. Your mileage may vary.

You won’t be able to tell the difference.

The eastern servers are in Chicago.

1 lag spike doing the naxx dance…

No one can really answer this for you. Make a toon on a similar server that’s already available to play on and you’ll be able to tell

In general, this game plays fine with latency compared to RTS or FPS games

and you’re doing the Dance Macabre.
