So yeah, how many of you are giving up on your mage? or re-rolled already in shadowlands?
I thought arcane was pretty good in the beta, but everyone else is saying frost and fire are atrocious, and that mage is the worst dps in the game atm in pvp.
Even getting bodied in M+ by Ret and tanks.
Shouldn’t blizzard just give mages what they want? which is: more damage?

Idk the way arcane feels and frost and fire to a person who’s not played mage in a while they feel fun. I guess it does so because I never care for or play pvp anymore.
Looking at it shaman druid or rogue for my main ATM and really having a hard time deciding lol
I’ve played arcane mage since TBC and not going to stop now. Not saying that it’s in a good spot or anything, I just play this spec out of spite if I have to

i gave up on my mage because she is boring.
fire and arcane dont click for me, and i wasnt about to force fun by forcing myself to learn different specs. frost made sense to me, it worked, it did damage.
but it wasnt fun. it wasn’t enjoyable to “sit here, cast frostbolt until things light up, hit the lights, repeat.”
so i rolled a warrior because i remember my warrior from WoD being fun, and here we are. now im having fun.
Gave up maining a mage in Season 3. See nothing that makes me want to go back to it as they double down on Kyrian/Venthyr style arcane, stick with Icy Veins being the be-all and end-all for frost, and I have never enjoyed fire.
Sticking with Lock for DF. 100x funner to play than what mage has become.
Haven’t been able to recruit mages at all for our raid teams. Seems a lot of people have just moved on to funner classes to play. Wish they’d bring back the intel scroll inscripters could make in BFA. Then you wouldn’t need a mage at all.

I play my frost mage out of sheer habit (it’s been my main forever). But I’d be lying if I said it’s been fun (short of some “moments” of BFA and the some of Legion I actually played. Most of BFA and SL has been bad and sad and I wonder why I keep playing it (i swear, the habit of me playing this game is worse than when I was a smoker)
I’m planning to stick to my mage, but I’ll make a final decision after testing out the talents. If I’m not having fun as arcane, I’ll play elemental shaman.

Definitely sticking with Mage, either as my main or alt. Frost and Arcane this expac had its ups and downs, but I am having fun with Fire.
shaman and rogue seem like good choices. I would only pick druid over them for RBGs.

It’s really hard ATM for me because I been wanting to do tauren rogue since BC but I also love enhancement and want to play it again love the spell animations and have the Challenge mode set to boot.
Shaman also has the benefit of being a great healer for all content and ele is a descent range if I want to do so. I don’t like or want to tank so there’s that and rogue is only pure dps.
Think I will finally return to the first toon I made and the elements rogue can be a main alt.
If you have no plan of doing RBGs, shaman is getting buffed with more utility, and from what I’ve heard it’s good damage in mythic + on the beta, but yeah. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to heal a lot for time efficiency. Shaman is definitely a good main to have.

I am 100% giving up on mage
Third xpac in a row, mage will be a fire bot playing exclusively RMP. Every mage player has same playstyle because there is no differentiation.
So sad considering frost mage used to be a PvP staple for WoW.

Sadly I gave up on the Mage (at least in retail) a short time into whatever the 2nd tier of raid was. All 3 specs felt bad to play, the focus on the multiple borrowed power systems requirement to sink huge piles of gold into legendaries every tier, and the feeling of having to do multiple chores just to keep up was enough. This off the back of BfA was just too much.
Thankfully Classic has been really good. Mage is great to play, and even though Fire isn’t the ‘best’ damage I’m loving it. I push my buttons, I do damage and it’s not all within the 10s combustion window. Most importantly, no RoP.

I’ll keep stubbornly being an arcane mage because dangit I like me some arcane flavour. I absolutely despise how underpowered I always feel compared to folks at a similar gs and skill level though, I know I’m not amazing but heck - be nice to go back to being a glass cannon rather than a glass squirty bottle.
All I ever see is mage nerfs. Played briefly on a fire mage lowbie alt and from last night’s pre-shutdown to this morning’s pre-patch there’s a -significant- loss of damage even to crappy leveling mobs in Zuldazar. Baffling really. I’ll poke around the gigantic and overly faffy talent trees (trees! two trees for one spec!) to see if I can bump up the numbers a bit but it’s feeling pretty limp as an entire class.
Ah well. At least I still have my sexy troll-pattern baldness and terrible mogs. They can’t take those fro…
uh wait
Don’t take those please. They’re all I have left!
This is the one thing stopping me from playing mage in DF. I really love arcane but I hate that build so much and I’m tired of it lol. I tried lock in beta but it’s just not my thing anymore. I’m considering going shaman right now.

Did a heroic fated raid last night as arcane. I saw a noticeable increase in dps compared to pre-patch. I felt buffed.
The fire mage did better than me. But he is better geared and skilled. His dps looked to be about the same pre and post-patch.
That said, it’s time for a change… and I love dragons. So in DF I’m going Evoker. The downside is Evokers in beta right now, compared to a mage:
- have less mobility
- have less mobile dps
- are squishier
- have much shorter range
- have weaker CDs for burn phases
- do less dps in both single-target and AOE
Basically, Evokers are an all-around worse class in just about every respect. But I’m going Evoker anyways!

I admire the fact you’re just going for it, and honestly I wouldn’t want Evoker to come out of the gates OP or anything. If they end up being too underwhelming or mechanically flawed, Blizzard will surely buff the brand new class. They’ve already given Preservation Evokers slightly more range to their abilities in the Beta so I have good hope for that class after everyone gets their hands on it.
Go for fun
thats what it ultimately boils down to

So fire is untenable in dungeons. Low dps. Arcane performed much better. Not really interested in frost, so can’t say about that. Fire might improve later down the tree and with other spells? Dunno.
The initial mage talent tree is just so weak.
Been a fire mage since the dawn of this game. I’m finally switching to either shaman or warlock. Mages no longer feel good to play and the dps just doesn’t seem great tbh.
