How many buttons/abilities do you press on a typical raid boss pull JUST for damage?

Hello folks! Due to all the “DH 2 buton” memes floating around, I actually got curious about how many buttons all classes, not just DH, actually press during a typical raid boss fight.

I pulled up my last H Sennarth kill for example, and here is the breakdown of all of my abilities that actually require a button push (ie, no passive/proc damage sources):

-deathsweep/blade dance (same button, just in/out of meta)
-annihilation/chaos strike (same button, just in/out of meta)
-eyebeam
-the hunt
-fel rush (momentum, unbound chaos)
-immo aura
-felblade
-throw glaive for fodder to the flame procs, or for dead GCDs
-essence break
-vengeful retreat (fury regen, momentum, initiative buff)
-sigil of flame (opener, fury regen, dead GCD filler)

Some other buttons I will regularly press during the fight, thought might not necessarily be rotation based:

-potion of elemental power
-meta
-on use trinket, currently the CoS on use

I did not count the defensives that I might press, such as blur/darkness, or healing potions. This is literally just all the buttons I press that will lead to damage. Possible I’m missing something, but adding it all up gives me 14 buttons I will push in a typical boss pull for damage.

Who else can do this process for your spec? How many buttons does your spec press in a typical boss pull? I want some data please!

EDIT: DH also has a kick that gives a small dps increase due to fury gain, and a purge that gives fury as well. I’m leaving them off the above list because you cannot use them on CD for damage, but they’re still an interesting consideration.

ret paladin is 14. i think maybe 15 if you count the def shield as a must cause we are squishy a

divine toll
templers verdict
blade of justice
seraphim
final reckoning
judgement
crusider strike
exorcism
crusade
radiant decree
shield of vengeance
hammer of wrath
consecrate
divine storm
rebuke - not dmg but for kicks if needed.

I think counting shield is fair, I can see rets saving it for certain mechanics to increase uptime.

I’m actually surprised ret’s button count is that high, I played ret in wrath and it was just like 4-5 buttons. That was like 14 years ago though, my knowledge of the spec is seriously outdated LOL

Edit: I forgot about the kick, that would be another button for me as well because it adds fury! I’ll leave it off the above list because its situational, but thats yet another button most classes press.

precast frostbolt into flurry
icy veins
frozen orb
spam ice lance for half a minute
use frostbolts to proc ice lances and flurries

1: sunfire
Sometimes 2 with moonfire

I am a healer though, I just keep sunfire dots up

Not too up to date with rogue dps either, why is vanish part of your list? Do you typically use it on CD every 2 min as a big dps CD, or do you save it for survivability?

It’s a nice filler if your ambush procs run dry, same with shadow dance. I tend to use it defensively too, since you get a heal from it.

For freaking every rogue spec, vanish is part of the offensive rotation, for Outlaw specifically its used (meta) for more Ambush spam on top of Shadow Dance these days.

Shadow Bolt
Demonbolt
Hand of Gul’Dan
Call Dreadstalkers
Power Siphon
Grimoire: Felguard
Summon Vilefiend
Nether Portal
Summon Demonic Tyrant
Demonic Strength
Soulburn
Implosion (depending on fight)
[On use trinkets]

That’s basically it, not considering utility, movement abilities or defensives, which are commonly used on boss fights.

So around 12.

Interesting info, thank you for the reply

most classes are around that, rest of the buttons are movement, defensives, CC, or other utility

Do shaman still need to press every totem separately, and do they each have their own GCD? I remember once upon a time there a was button you could press to drop all your totems at the same time with once GCD, but I’m not sure if that’s still around.

If that button doesn’t exist, totem management must be a HUGE pain point.

About 12 as Affliction.

For Destruction it’s much simpler:

Immolate
Incinerate
Conflagrate
Chaos Bolt
Summon Infernal
Channel Demonfire
Havoc
[On use trinkets]

That’s for single target (and occasional cleave). In AOE there are a couple more, but I don’t use Destro for AOE fights at all.

Devastation Evoker that cleared Normal Vault of the Incarnates:

  1. Well Fed
  2. Phial
  3. Blessing of the Bronze (raid buff)
  4. Living Flame
  5. Fury of the Aspects
  6. Horn of Valor (on-use Trinket)
  7. Dragonrage
  8. Fire Breath
  9. Shattering Star (if talented)
  10. Eternity Surge
  11. Firestorm (if talented)
  12. Disintegrate
  13. Azure Strike
  14. Tip the Scales (if talented)
  15. Deep Breath

So about twelve to fifteen depending on talent choices… Not as much as I thought, though this doesn’t include defensives and healing, like Obsidian Scales or Emerald Blossom.

It’s actually really interesting to see that a most of these lists are in the 10-14 range. I thought there would be a bigger disparity.
