Ragnaros, Cthun, Kil’jaeden, Yogg-Saron, Yshaarj (indirectly), Kil’jaeden again, Argus, N’Zoth, Jailer (lol), and Galakrond (maybe?)

Far too much.

But we still don’t know the real threat that’s coming.

Universe is hella old and the Azerothian races are relatively young. Most dangerous things would be “ancient”.

yo can we get some help with wow tickets ? mine has been on going for 5 days, with the only feed back is a link to wow head . one we pay days to play this game , and you are telling me its gonna be 30 days for them to fix a quest thats intrinsic to game play (a dying world wont trigger so I cant unlock the new races , having done all the other stuff needed except the war campaign). and when i submitted a ticket , having already looked up possible resolutions , they just referred me to a 3rdf party site like they are Digital Extremes . im fuming man , i just want my silly little quest so i can go about my silly little way

I feel like this comment should be accompanied by a suggestion/example of a final boss that isn’t rooted an ancient history.

(Hmm … how could Hogger become a final boss without it being the result of ancient power? An expansion where a gnomish shrink ray backfires and we just have to fight our way out of a microscopic realm?)

Azeroth had a rough childhood. Too many schoolyard bullies have grown up and found her on social media.

At this point I’ve given up on a Closure expansion to Old Gods! Give us something new that doesn’t suck!

It does make sense for an ancient (somewhat) forgotten land to have a slumbering ancient enemy.

The Black Locus made by Deathwing whispers to the Players to meet the source of the Whispers down below.

The 5th Old God is finally making his appearance.

There were 5 Living Old Gods chained beneath the earth according to the WC3 Manual and now we are meeting the 5th…

The leader of the Primal Incarnates is also an Ancient Enemy.

Xal’atath hinted at the 5th in her Whispers:

“It is ironic that the weakest of us may be the ultimate victor. C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and… well. Only one would remain to consume the world, that was always meant to be.”

She decided it would be better not to mention one of the stronger Old Gods that could potentially be defeated before N’Zoth consumed Azeroth. In the end her gambit paid off and both N’Zoth & G’huun went and bulldozed ahead without even thinking of their remaining rivals and got themselves killed.

The 5th Old God is stronger & subtler than N’Zoth and as far as Xal’atath is concerned is much more capable of restoring the Black Empire than he was.

There was also the possibility that G’huun the actual weakest could have won but he was too dense to remain hidden and ensured his seals would be broken opening the way to his prison thus ensuring one of the stronger Old Gods would be broken out gunz ablazing.

Yogg-Saron died because he was still imprisoned when he reared his head and C’Thun died because he went straight to relying on his Physical and Magical Offensive Attacks without supplementing them with Mind Control.

N’Zoth died because his Mind Control was overpowered by the Raid Leader’s willpower allowing him/her to Re-Originate N’Zoth to his base elements.

Hard to have new enemies when the most popular profession is being a murder-hobo

Well, we have two options in this game, kill gods or kill the other faction. When we get bored of doing one, we switch to the other, and that tends to put gods on edge. Self preservation and all.

Also gives our god like allies a reason to drum up new god like challenges, keeps them off the hitlist.

Without opposition, the game would turn into Hello Kitty Island adventure :cat2:

Yeah it is annoying how there’s always this new “ancient” threat that crops up that somehow wasn’t around all this time. Blizzard always just pulls stuff out their butt to create a new threat when what they need to do is focus on building continuity. Instead of the primalists and stonebro etc, it could’ve been the culmination of the Infinite Dragonflight planning after all these years in the dark, finally coming into fruition that revealed the Dragon Isles etc.

That’s just a quick example I thought of that uses an enemy that’s long been established but not utilized in a heavy handed manner since Cataclysm that gives them further development. Just like Blizzard could’ve used Arthas and the scourge in a more meaningful manner instead of just pulling the Jailer out their butt in Shadowlands.

A reason Kil’jaedan was so compelling in Legion and kept people invested in the story, as well as Gul’dan is they were villains much like the heroes. Characters who stretched back many years, with their own development and progression until their time to finally shine had come.

The Jailer? The Primalists? Loosely inspired “ancient” enemies that are implied to have been an active antagonistic force but in reality, just lame filler enemies created out of nowhere to fill the narrative void.

It’s a game trope. Pretty much every fantasy RPG has it.

  • Cause of witcher 3 problems? Antagonist is literally an Ancient evil elf from a parallel dimension.
  • Cause of persona 4 problems? Scientists messed around with ancient evil stuff and inadvertedy allowed demons to pour into reality.
  • Cause of FF7 problems? Ancient Evil that crashed into the planet thousands of years ago (Jenova)
  • Cause of Chrono Trigger problems? Ancient evil, lavos.
  • Cause of planescape torment problems? The nameless one, an ancient being.

It’s a trope and it’s fine, I still loved all those games.

One of them even wanted to ‘date’ her. After wanting to kill her originally. (Sargeras)
