I have NO idea what kind of money these add on companies or individuals make. All I know now is that will stop. Do many of them do it for a living or is it almost always something a little “extra” on the side?
I just don’t know that world.

I can’t imagine they are really going to lose anything financially since they are free add-ons and get updated for free.
Addons are made by people that have a passion to make things better for everyone. The only thing these developers will lose is all the time put into their projects. Remember that it’s about combat addons in WoW.
Not as many, nor as bad as the AGS workers who were sacked.
The only people that are going to lose money over this are curseforge, and that is absolutely, positively, unequivocally a GOOD thing.
not much, a lot of addon makers are professionals who do wow addons as a hobby
None?
Other than Zygor and that other subscription leveling aid.
Addon authors typically do receive some share of the ad revenue from distribution platforms like curseforge (overwolf) or wago. I would guess its very unlikely that this is an amount they live off of, but could be significant for the handful of addons that get millions of downloads.
Probably next to 0. These are free add-ons who receive quite little from it. Maybe some donations every once in awhile, but no serious incomes to live off.
I watched someone give $300 dollars to a guy that debates people on youtube.
Dont underestimate the financial power of people who like to be entertained.
Is Details going away too? because the fun part of DPS in dungeons (especially caster with all the annoying things to dodge) is seeing how much dps you do.
Blizz is adding their own dps meter
One worry less then. What about the WoW Instant Messenger addon?
I am too used to that one, although its mostly for whispers. But more comfortable than reading the wow text box.
The vast majority of them are passion projects that make very little money.
Like Bags said, mostly passion projects.
…and I have to wonder how many of them are still a passion, or only being continued because they’ll feel like they’re letting people down if they don’t keep pushing ahead with the constant updates.
A bunch of people are going to reclaim a chunk of their lives.
dang.. that’s a ton of add ons out there that people do just for loyalty.
Probably will stick around. The only addons that are being cut are combat addons. It may not function in combat anymore, and addons can no longer automate the sending of messages (although I don’t recall if WIM did this in the first place). But overall, I don’t see this addon being hit bad enough to be gone forever.
Well 90% of addons are free so…
Probably Not that many?
If this was Family Feud the top answer would be 0. The best ones are free. Websites with millions of adds might see less traffic but they can go the way of the dinosaur for all we care.
not necessarily…they can just make addons that will still be allowed.
adapt.
If they love what they do, they’ll keep doing it.
