How many active players are there?

Looking at stats:

  • Raider IO shows 28 guilds to have Fyrakk CE.
  • Data for Azeroth shows 0.0044% of the current active playing base to have Fyrakk CE.
  • Assuming 25-30 per guild to get CE, rounded up that’s 1000 players.

Correct or not?

If 1000 current players have CE, and that represents 0.0044% of the current playing base, my possibly bad maths calculates that to be 15 million active players?

Maybe active accounts probably not players

Yeah it’s not 15 million active players. The graveyard of 70+ low pop servers is kind of the big red flag here.

See DFA collects data from external sites alongside Blizzards APIs, and the APIs only provide active account data, meaning paid for and subbed accounts. So for arguments sake and according to Blizzard, those would all be an MAU, with an active player or not.

Looking at DFA they estimate there is 3 million active players, but with some basic napkin maths based on the current CE data that DFA has, cross referenced with Raider IO, so there would be somewhere in the region on 15-20 million active accounts.

Who knows how many active accounts pay and don’t play, but that’s a far cry more then many players think.

My low pop server has more than you realize and there’s other regions playing this game.

Too hard to know what’s an Alt and what’s a person. Also servers being a bad tell with, while we know there are less subs than Wrath, we also experienced steady migration to “megapop” servers.

Low pop servers have always been a graveyard, that’s what a low pop server is… a low pop server.

More than 14 but probably less than 9 billion.

DFA does somewhat of a good job with this with how they cross reference data. If we take the bare minimum 20 players per guild who has killed Fyrakk, that’s 560 people only. Even if players have used alts to get CE and the DFA stats are out, that’s just worse.

If the 0.0044% completion DFA has is half of what it should be, that is that number represents 1 player and their alt, that means that statistic would actually be 0.0022%, which means there would actually be somewhere in the region of 30-40 million MAU, which cannot be correct.

And that’s why I used CE, because it’s current, new and everyone who has CE, unless they unsubbed within the last 30 days, should all be part of the active accounts and account for 1 active player only in that 0.0044% statistic.

Now if I grabbed KSM and someone multiboxes KSM across multiple alts, different story, lots of data to check, but this is the top 1000 or less raiders in the game, very high chance there are no ‘1 player, 2 alts’ who has CE.

What’s the meme? “Between 1 and infinity”.

At least four.

I’m not sure where you are getting these crazy numbers at…the dataforazeroth statistics page shows that it is tracking 3 million characters and 1.1 million accounts. I have no clue how you are turning that into 15 million accounts. It seems your calculations are based on faulty data.

Impossible, there’s just no way

We don’t even know where they’re getting that information from.

There are about 300 active players.

same as Wowhead and other sites, they get it through blizzards own API.

And unless you sign up for that stuff, they don’t know you exist.

i think around 3 mill players playing.

1 million real players, and 14 million full Asian bots chans.

So Blizzard… we’re not in 2009.

Not bots? Less than 1 mil per game

There’s no way there are more active players than number of game copies sold.

It just doesn’t work out like that.

If you sold 3 million copies, you can’t have 20 million players.
