How long will WoW survive?

Do you think WoW will continue to survive and generate a meaningful amount of revenue for Blizzard after this expansion? How long do you think the game will last?

Whew! I’m glad you posted this because I felt like WoW was a dead game until I read this.

The pessimist in me wants to say it won’t last much longer. The realist would probably say we got a few more years at least before the systems simply can’t handle it anymore.

If robot can survive

As long as it makes money, it will continue on. I mean, Everquest still exists and is 6 (?) years older and hasn’t been at the top since 2004.

Yes.

The franchise is solid. DF is what you get when they yank borrowed power out – no reason to play.

Folks play for power, when they get it, they stop. As with all games, the novelty and ā€œfun-nessā€ as an activity fades, especially when there’s no reward.

If you have maxed out the reps and are comfortable with your gear, there’s little reason to play right now. You can level alts, if that’s your thing, but there’s no REASON to do that save for leveling alts.

With no power grind, nobody grinds, nobody plays. The Dreamsurges are dead because there’s no power there, just cosmetics, which a lot of folks don’t care much about.

So.

The game isn’t going anywhere. They’re always working on the next two expansions. They haven’t run out of ideas yet. Still stories to tell.

Considering this is still one the most active players mmo, and looking at other mmos like UO that have been around even longer yet have a very small population, WoW will be around for a long long time still. WoW is still bringing in plenty of money.

For the 10th time, yes.

I give it at least ten years in some form or another.

It will last but it will continue to trickle further and further away from how it was originally. It will adapt to make the most revenue for what it is. The WoW as we knew it from Vanilla to MoP will be in a WoW museum soon enough.

Given the status of EverQuest still kicking around, I’d say WoW servers will be up until the cost to keep them up outweighs the revenues they bring in. That could be another decade given how addicted some whales seem to be!

Definitely still the most popular game of its genre and probably will always be as long as they keep making expansions with this quality to regain loyal fans. If they make another shadowlands the game will continue to die.

SL was the point where CCs stopped giving useful advice and started farming for clicks off the anti WOW echo chamber. Seeing as how some of them were million sub CCs, it created the illusion that WOW was in trouble.

There is no evidence that it was. Outside the echo chamber there is not a shred of evidence that ā€œthe playersā€ in general didn’t like SL. In fact I sill see players there.

It’s an old game, you would expect subs to be tailing off but it’s still one of the top MMOs which it would not be if the CCs and echo chamber were right about it’s demise.

A lot longer than me probably.

3 more expansions unless something miraculous happens on the planet.
Thats about 6 years.
WoW wont die because of WoW or the player base.
It’ll be killed by politics.

Not entirely. For those of us like me who don’t do M+ or raid, we can get one Wyrm crest a week which is at least a slow path to improvement.

Until they implement the rumored trade-ups in 10.2 at least.

As has been said, the game will survive as long as it keeps being profitable enough.

But will it? People will just run private servers then and tailor them to their reality. I saw a Calvin and Hobbes Strip on it many years ago, and we saw it happen again with what happened on Nostralius. Ah here I found it.

What will really happen is that will happen again, but this time when Blizzard sends C&Ds they will be ignored. Why? Because Politics drive people off the deep end, and make them feel like the victim, even as they fight ā€˜the good fight’ against ā€œthe manā€. Or whatever nonsense one subscribes to on any given day.

I only base this trend off precedent and prior instances of this sort of flagrant IP theft. Look what happened with Harry Potter and Rowling. Same thing will happen here at a certain point. It’s probably already happening tbh. Don’t agree with a single bit of it, but that’s what humanity’s mental speed is right now.

Tend to agree.

Longer than us, unless humanity ends.
