How long has it been that you can't change weapons in combat?

I was sitting waiting on a raid boss to start, and had won on a greed loot a dagger from the previous boss, so tried it on, to see if I could get the transmog on it (I was on my surv hunter alt) and the LFR went and pulled the boss with no countdown, and I was then unable to switch my polearm back on.

I feel like an idiot using just a dagger (lol) and hilariously not lowest dps but it’s LFR so it’s okay, I guess. I just always thought you could change weapons in combat? Is this new? Am I just forgetting something I never realized?

Well, it’s been that way at least since i started playing back in 2012. I don’t know about before that though.

i just tested it n i could swap weapons so idk. Now if you try to swap back n forth too quick it won’t let you, but after a moment you can.

it was really weird, because when I tried the dagger on (again, just to see the look lol, I know better, can’t dual wield like surv hunters should) it removed my Rashon, put the dagger in my OH, which was also weird as it’s just a “one-hand” not an offhand only or something, and then the fight started. and it was like “you can’t change weapons in combat”, although I could at least move the dagger to my MH so I could stabby stab with it. And then of course most of my attacks wouldn’t work because they require a 2H to do so. I had kill command, Serpent Sting, Death Chakram, and my bombs, and was still beating people on the meter (LFR lulz).

Just thought it odd. I’m assuming some sort of weird surv hunter glitch, as I honestly don’t think Blizz even knows what can and can’t be equipped for hunters and used right now.

This isn’t accurate. Unless something has recently changed, we’ve always been able to swap weapons during combat. It was typically called Blade Twisting, and a few specs even utilized it over the years. Though they have repeatedly done things to deter it, like incurring a GCD, specs like Frost DK triggering an ICD on effects like Might of the Frozen Wastes, or just generally having specific weapon requirements on abilities.

What is the polearm? You can change weapons in combat unless they have a secondary effect.

So if you are using the polearm from Fyrakk, that would be why.

It is to prevent people from switching weapons once the weapon with the equip / use effect is ‘dead weight’ in comparison. For example, Gavel back in Shadowlands. It is basically dead weight once the effect has finished as it is still on cd for 4 mins (effect lasts 1 min, 5 min cd). So a weapon with secondary stats (as Gavel had none) would be better for those 4 mins until Gavel is off cd.

EDIT: Just read the second post from the OP and yeah, Rashon will be why. Since Rashon and the other weapons from Fyrakk have an effect that causes the random damage proc to do 5x the damage when the target is above 90% hp.

I find it very common to try to equip a piece of gear in a dungeon and find that I can’t because I’m stuck in combat for no apparent reason.

You could always change weapon in combat…how do you think we used to fish on pvp servers? We had a weapon swap macro ready.

What weird reasoning. I get what you are saying, but wow… meh.

I believe when it comes to Rashon and the other Fyrakk weapons, it is because of the random damage proc does 5x the damage when the target is above 90% hp. If it was just a random damage proc with no modifiers to it, you would be able to swap it on and off. For example I could swap my Servant splitter (1 hand axe from Waycrest that does a random bleed) with another 1 hand weapon that has no equip / use effect while in combat, and visa versa. Meanwhile I was not able to equip Fyr’alath, nor take it off while in combat. Even when the use effect was off cd.

Yea they did that because dks would switch their weapons to get different runeforges.

It’s never let me change weapons during combat. Maybe a glitch/bug since i’m prone to suffer from most bugs whenever Blizzard breaks the game in one way or another.

You can change weapons during combat. If it’s not letting you then i dont know. Maybe press the button harder?

I got stuck with only an offhand on my warlock, give that a shot. I don’ t think we have been able to change gear in combat for some time in retail. It might have started around BFA not sure. The only reason i can think is it thwarted the warriors broken weapon spell, but i am not really sure. just because i am old, it doesn’t make me a great wow historian

Or you know? Maybe try turning it off then back on, reset your modem, make sure it is plugged in, Call tech support, and repeat the process while they do nothing to help except make comments that are just said to be said.
