I know its good for Molten Core but how much long past that can you use it, I ask because I really like the look of it.
You’ll ideally want to upgrade as you can, and it’s clearly not ideal, but remember vanilla didn’t just hand out loot like candy… you only got ~2-3 drops per boss for your entire 40 man raid you not realistically even be able to get an upgrade, if the drops aren’t there for you… I ended up using the AB-Rep staff and/or a mindfang/tome of shadow force (ab and av exalted) all the way into Naxxramas in vanilla, for example.

I think during Vanilla I used Azuresong Mageblade until I got a caster dagger from BWL.
Basically, use it until you get something better. But assuming you’re running content, you should get something better the very next tier. BWL has multiple better weapons. And I think so does ZG.

You can use it as long as you want because the odds of you getting an upgrade to begin with are really low. Loot is hard to come by in Classic compared to modern WoW.
My guild in classic went all the way to Naxx and I never got a two hander better than Untamed Blade from Blackwing Lair, or finished my tier 2 wrath set. Meanwhile our druids and warlocks were completely pimped to the point that many of our guild were rolling alts in those classes to pick up loot rather than have it just be disenchanted. You are simply at the mercy of RNJesus.
I am not 100% sure but I don’t remember ever being able to upgrade it. We had just super super bad luck with caster weapons in my group. It took me forever to even get the damned mageblade and while we got a few caster weapons in BWL I don’t think I got one of them.
Was always fun whenever this went to a warlock and all the mages in the raid would be like “oh come on it’s a MAGEblade”

You can still keep it after you get a better item, make a macro to change your outfit while your in cities or roleplaying. This is what a lot of people used to do back in the day.

The mageblade is excellent and won’t be replaced until the BWL dagger, if you get that. The next reasonable upgrade (if the claw doesn’t drop) is the AQ40 sword; quite some time away.

As a holy Paladin I loved it! Mages got so salty when I had more dkp.

Jindo’s hexxer is better for pallies but ZG comes out after MC.
(mageblade is still excellent for pallies but isn’t bis for very long)
That is why loot council is better than DKP. Good raids don’t let some healing weapon get sharded because all the holy pallies have Mageblades and the casters are still using blues or the ZG Dagger.

For Vanilla we actually used DKP but with limits. I went through all the forum posts complaining about loot and where guilds talked about which items should be prioritized for which players and I made a list of rules on which classes had priority for which items. And even in ZG where we didn’t use DKP (we just rolled. I think we tried Suicide Kings as a separate DKP system than our main raid but then decided it wasn’t worth the hassle) I still placed restrictions on what people could and could not roll on. So that cool looking Cobra Staff in ZG was prioritized for resto Druids because by the time one dropped for us most of our priests already had Benediction or were on their way to getting it. Priests couldn’t roll for it “because it looks cool” if a druid needed it as an upgrade.
Still loot is my least favorite thing about raiding. I hated people who were so petty and jealous and caused drama over loot.
As a caster, you use a stat stick until you get a BETTER stat stick.

I waited until i got the wraith blade from naxx to replace my azure song, it was just to sexy to look at.
I don’t think you understand bid dkp. If healers have mageblade. Mages get theirs for less dkp. Last mage can essentially get theirs for 1dkp before we would shard anything.
Their concern is that aurastone hammers will be sharded, not mageblades.
DKP has the effect of people gunning only for bis stuff, while middle tier stuff gets overlooked. So overall utility is lessened.
I would have been happy with either, I couldn’t get a dang thing to drop
