How is WrA? New to RP

I want to try out RPing. I am going to roll as either a Human Paladin or Blood Elf Paladin.

Questions…

  1. How is WrA?
  2. Is it New-to-RP friendly?
  3. Is WrA Alliance or Horde heavy?
  4. Is there raiding scene on a RP server? It wont be a focus of mine but it might be something I want to clear down the road.
  5. What addons are recommended for RPing?

Thanks in advance!

Heya and welcome to the server and the wonderfully weird world of WoW RP!

To answer your questions…

  1. I haven’t played on any servers other than WrA for well over a decade, but I made the jump to RP servers a while ago because people were generally more chill.

  2. Yep. Just put “I’m new” in your RP profile and you’ll do fine.

  3. Horde heavy, although there is Alliance RP to be found. Most RP in general outside of walking up to random strangers outside of taverns will happen by checking out the parties/competitions/server campaigns advertised here on the forums or by joining a guild.

  4. Yep, plenty of raiding. Mostly on Horde side, though.

  5. https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow#RPAddOns

Also, you’ll want to stock up on Elixirs of Tongues, as there are lots of RP events where Horde and Alliance interact.

Here are my top roleplay addons that I pretty much can’t go without!

Total RP 3
The most commonly used RP profile addon! Has an abundance of features I’d not do justice trying to explain myself, but is the quintessential resource for recognizing other RPers in-game and getting an idea of their character and what sort of RP they’re interested in – and vice versa for yourself! There is also Total RP 3: Extended, which adds even more features such as creating your own custom items that you can trade to others and even drop in the world as a stash that other players can find later.

Cross RP
This addon gives you some nifty features to help facilitate cross-faction roleplay. If you’ve drank an Elixir of Tongues it will tell you when the buff is about to expire, AND it’ll even show you the TRP3 profiles of people on the opposite faction or on different servers who also have Cross RP installed!

Listener
Without this addon I am truly lost in roleplay with more than a small handful of people. It helps you keep track of messages coming from specific individuals and filter out other conversations. Great when your chat box is otherwise getting flooded with people talking and you worry you’ve missed your partner’s post! I primarily use the Snooper feature.

Emote Splitter
Even for non-RPers this addon is essential, in my opinion. If you have a lot to say that doesn’t fit in a single chat message, instead of the box stopping you from typing once you hit 255 characters, this addon will let you type as much as you want and then automatically split up the message according to Blizzard’s chat limitations once you hit enter. If you like typing paragraphs this one’s definitely for you.

Elephant
An addon that logs your chat messages and lets you copy and paste them outside of the game! AMAZING for saving important roleplay encounters quickly and efficiently. Big tip: once you download it, go into the addon’s settings in-game for each character and increase the “max log lines”! I usually set it to 5000, and this is enough to preserve a couple of months of chat at a time per chat channel.

Honorable mentions: DiceMaster (advanced addon for RP combat systems), Musician (lets you play and listen to midi music in-game), and Narcissus (glorified character pane and an ASTOUNDINGLY elaborate in-game photo mode) are all wonderful creative addons that, while not essential, I recommend checking out some time once you feel like you’ve suitably learned the ropes of the basics!

I hope this helps! Welcome to the world of roleplay, friend!

  1. How is WrA?

It’s quieter than it used to be, although that probably goes for all realms (especially RP realms) at the moment.

  1. Is it New-to-RP friendly?

Definitely! Just be sure to mark that down in your RP addon of choice (most people use TRP3, though!)

  1. Is WrA Alliance or Horde heavy?

It leans a bit more to the Horde side, but there’s still a rather dedicated group of Alliance RPers.

  1. Is there raiding scene on a RP server? It wont be a focus of mine but it might be something I want to clear down the road.

Yes, but (and this goes for most of NA) it is mostly Horde side.

  1. What addons are recommended for RPing?

I really cannot type this up any better than Shaureyne above me.

Don’t forget to wear a hat so people know you’re RPing.

Welcome to WrA!

  1. WrA is a great roleplaying server, I’ve never had any issues with it. Everybody here is quite friendly.
  2. Yep! Just mark yourself as “new” and there are plenty of people who are willing to guide you through. Keep in mind that quite a bit of the more story-oriented roleplays are within guilds, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I highly recommend joining one. If you’d rather not, most walk-up and casual roleplaying happens in the Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar, with the ocassional sprinkling of activity in Silvermoon City.
  3. Leans much more towards Horde, but the Alliance has a few dedicated members to fill the streets of Stormwind. The roleplaying community here is fairly close-knit, everybody knows everybody, etc.
  4. Yes, but it’s almost entirely on Horde only.
  5. TRP 3 and TRP 3: Extended. The Extended bit is optional, but TRP 3 is pretty paramount to roleplaying here. Most everybody uses it in some form.

Hope you’ll enjoy your stay here!

The Dawn is gathering a guild based team for AOTC raiding on Alliance, if you’re deadset on raiding A-side.

As with most questions about servers experience every answer you’re going to get is totally subjective. Take anything we say - myself included - as an just an opinion. In the end you’ll have to test the waters yourself.

IMHO TL:DR - In my experience there are more opportunities to rp than there is time to participate. There is no simple one-size-fits-all place to look for roleplay or style of roleplay on WrA. Quality matters more than quantity, and what that means to you will determine where you will find the most enjoyable rp and who you want to invest time in playing with.

1. The people who are on WrA are here because we enjoy it. Whether or not you enjoy it as well depends a lot on what you are looking for, when & where you are looking for it. There used to be a few spots where there were almost always roleplayers standing around. Outside the Blue Recluse in SW for one example. These days where people tend to roleplay is a lot more widely distributed, so those older hubs aren’t as active as they used to be.

2. There are plenty of individuals, guilds and events that are supportive of new roleplayers. There are also plenty who have expectations which new roleplayers can’t necessarily meet.

My personal suggestion would be to hold off on committing to any particular guild - seek out individual players who are interested in helping. You will fond some who are even willing to sort of “chaperone” - help you enjoy events without being overwhelmed for example.

The Total Roleplay add-on is probably one you will want to install asap, for two reasons. First of all, there is an option for people to indicate that they are experienced roleplayers who are willing to help you. Secondly, you don’t have to fill out a character profile right away. You can put something in it to the effect that you are exploring what roleplaying like and experimenting to find out what works for you.

3. There’s the whole question of Quality vs. Quantity. Would you rather have a few very enjoyable opportunities to roleplay, or a ton of mediocre or even unpleasant experiences? Furthermore, it’s important to make a distinction between the statistics you can find on line about total character (not player) population, and how many of the players of those characters actively roleplay. There are no reliable statistics on roleplay. None.

If you watch the forum for any length of time sooner or later you will see “Horde RP is dead, only Alliance RP is any good” and “Alliance RP is dead, only Horde RP is any good” posted at almost the same exact time. That should tell you how subjective the answers to your question are.

In addition, right now may not be the best time to judge the roleplay community as far as numbers go. A lot of people temporarily stop playing during content lulls. So the available pool of potential roleplay partners is likely to be lower now than when 9.2 is released. There are also people who left because of the current Blizzard debacle(s) regarding mistreatment of employees. Some - but an unknown number - of the players who left are likely to come back.

Within the RP community on WrA there are a lot of cross-faction/neutral/non-aligned roleplay opportunities. This is an important enough part of roleplay on WrA that there are even what I would call “twinned guilds” - more or less the same group of players in an Alliance and a Horde guild which from the in-character point of view is a single organization. So if you are looking for friendly activities rather than confrontational RP then picking a faction probably isn’t as important as it once was.

4. There are definitely guilds on WrA very much focused on raiding. There also guilds which have both raiding and roleplay activities.

5. Shaureyne has a good short list. Coping with a lot of new add-ons all at once can be overwhelming, especially for trying out a new aspect of enjoying WoW. IMHO the single most important add-on for someone new to roleplaying is TRP. It lets you see who else is interested in roleplaying, gives you an idea what they are doing, how willing they are to help, and lets you help other people to know what you are looking for. Start using the other add-ons as you get more comfortable. Use the ones that the people you rp with are using.

The Horde smells funny. Come to Alliance.

There is nothing funny about the way they smell. Take that back.

It sounds like the Alliance could use some more peeps. Thank you all for the info. I appreciate it. I will be making a Human Paladin later to begin my journey with WrA!

Hail, Human. Please bring me your cheese.

Welcome to the server!

Everyone else already hit the nail on the head for good rp starter tips, so I’ll just warn that there’s already a character on Wyrmrest named Zieg, and I only know this cause I know him personally. Other than that, Welcome to Wyrmrest Accord!
