Title is my question! Is the new curseforge app as bad as we assumed? I just wanna make sure my addons are up to date and do it all securely.
Replying so I can come back to this, I haven’t updated yet because of how sketch everything sounded. But ugh, I’d really like for it to not be as bad as people were hoping.
Personally for me when it comes to software, if I have to be cautious I don’t bother.
Try WoWup if you feel unsure.
Super easy, download and go. It auto ports your add-ons too so it takes like 1 minute.
No idea. I’ve been using Wowup.io.
Overwolf will always be overwolf. Its still bloatware. Personally, WoWup is the way to go this time. It pulls from everywhere so you dont have to worry about your ui stuff as well.
using wowup and very happy, eager to see how overwolf is from all the people saying how it’s scammy and untrustworthy it is.
Ugh… don’t really understand people thinking everyone is the boogie man. I’ve been using overwolf for other games forever now and just updated my stuff for wow and went about my business…
I have been using it for about a month without any issues at all. It works pretty much exactly like the Twitch updater and you can configure it to close both the Cursed Forge updater and the Overwolf app at the same time. So when you are done updating, you shut them both down at once.
Now the ads stream isn’t active yet, so until then all I can say it is works fine as an updater.
Funny thing is my computer wouldn’t allow the download of Wowup (deemed malware) but accepted Overwolf. I have been using it for a few days w/out issue. Transfered all my add-ons too w/out problems.
Overwolf is spyware plain and simple and a resource hog if you leave it up. If you dig into the settings you can improve this, but really you need to know how to configure firewalls to avoid the spyware aspect.
Not sure what exactly is supposed to be bad about it,
It updates my addons just fine.
They say “bloatware,” but I don’t see anything of the sort. I don’t see any excessive disk or memory usage, and I don’t see it trying to install anything to my PC. What exact part of the software is so bloated?
People cry out “malware,” but I haven’t seen them present any evidence to substantiate those claims. If it truly was malware as people claimed, Intel, EA, and multiple other gaming organizations would not be partnered with them. Plus, wouldn’t nearly every antivirus program recognize it as a threat since it’s so widespread?
I seen videos where people were playing HotS and ad’s popped up. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be in the middle of a dungeon and see a Tostinos ad.
Probably a certificate issue. Smaller indie projects don’t usually have all the certificate ducks in a row.
Installed it December 1st. No issues. Ads show as a blank box (likely because of ublock origin) and I set it on both the curse client and the separate overwolf app to not run on startup or continue running in background
Is there a desktop version of Ublock? I don’t get ads either but that’s almost certainly because of my VPN (I have no reason to investigate)
Heard people claiming Overwolf was fine and wasn’t giving ads etc but considering they stated they wanted to monetize addons “for the authors benefit” (lol) + all the bad feedback they’ve had in the past I figured they’re trying to coax an audience over before they slam them with intrusive ads and what not.
I just started using Wowup instead and it’s great so far.
I have it installed and it works just like Twitch’s addon manager for the most part. So far nothing has hijacked my computer and held me for ransom.
I install manually. I had some crazy guy tell me i was defending overwolf by doing that. I was “gaslighting” lol.
It’s not. Works like a charm. No madman jumps out through the screen to stab you in the eye.
