How is Mana Management in Vanilla

Basic question about mana management in Vanilla.

As a mage I expect to be doing lots of drinking while leveling. Not an issue because mages make there own water, but in PVP (on AB) I am noticing mage go oom super super fast (at lvl 40), where basically any fight with a healer ends up ooming the mage. Is this the same at lvl 60? in raids? I know consumables are very important, but just want to get the gist.

Priest I feel leveling is mostly shadow word pain, wand to death and doesn’t have much mana problems, but how is mana in pvp and raids? As heals i expect to be spamming lower level heals, but have no idea about mana for shadow. Any thoughts are helpful.

Warlock. Has pet, drain life, drain mana (I think), and life tap. Doesn’t seem like mana is as big of an issue for this caster. Thoughts?

Shaman: ELE seems to be similar to a mage, but goes oom quicker and does not have ability to make own water. Resto seems spam low level heals. I have big concerns for mana management as ele, but what do we think about resto?

Druid = oomkin?

Pally: Do not really know much.

I like the idea of mana management, but don’t want that to be the main aspect of my gameplay. Any thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Healing you wanted to slip out of casting for 5 seconds to regen a tick of mana every now and again(5 second rule).

I dont know about at high end (AQ40/Naxx) gear levels, but its a huge component of caster game play for sure.

I remember playing as a priest, sometimes it felt like the hardest part of any dungeon or raid enounter was mana management. Knowing which members could safely let die to conserve just taht little extra mana in a tough fight. In retail, I literally don’t run out of mana - ever. i mean literally ever.

Potions are a major factor back in the day with mana regen. It’s not like it is today. You can use as many mana pots in a boss fight as you want as it had a cd but does not have the need to go out of combat. So you will be buying A LOT of mana potions.

Aside from being extremely geared or at least Aq+ yes mana is going to be one of your biggest concerns. Similar to how the level 40 duels you can very realistically go oom every single fight 1v1 or group. The only time this isn’t true is if you one shot them, they one shot you, or you’re in a really favorable fight (they have no cds, it’s 2v1, or they are low health)

Yeah that is what I expected. Any class have less mana problems then another? For example disc P better than resto shammy or Aff lock better than frost mage? Is there an absolute worst class spec (besides boomkin)?

Pure casting from least to most down time:

  1. Warlock
  2. Priest
  3. Everything else

If you use your weapons, you are going to shave your downtime to almost nothing. As a hybrid if you are going to skip dungeons just focus on boar gear to minimize downtime. Basically focus on spirit in total. Warriors and rogues have a high multiplier for spirit to health regen. Sadly, they can’t make much use of that once they hit 60.

under geared mana was horrible for healing priest, mage, and warlock at 60 in dungeons and especially raids. while just starting AQ and ZQ we often had our caster OOMing and having a pally judge wisdom and the casters wanding to regen is slow times of fights. often leaving an off-tank with a trash mob doing just enough to keep aggro and pulled off to the side and having OOM casters move over and wand mid-fight. We used this technique in the 3rd fight in AQ20 keeping the last mob of each wave up for wand regen. once geared appropriately for the content it was less of an issue.

forgot to add in PvP as DPS it’s all about burst blow mana like it’s going out of style then retreat/drink rinse repeat

enchanment shaman had the worst mana issues in the game, but it sounds like you are more interested in casters

mages have to drink a lot early on, but they dont really go out of mana in raids if you are good. you have to think about what you are doing though to achieve that

wands are actually pretty good too for anyone that can use them

In PvP if you’re trying to burst something down fast, typically another caster, it’s going to drain your mana. Against most melee, you’ll have the tools to actually keep your mana up pretty well.

In raids, your mana should last a pretty long time if you play right. Just remember that AoE takes a lot of mana, so plan around that if the fight has it.
