I just started doing M+ about two weeks ago. Having an absolute blast. However, since I've started running +7 keys, I've noticed that my threat generation doesn't seem to be able to keep up with some of the higher geared DPS in the groups.
Right now, my weapon and shield are my biggest pain points (my overall ilvl is 359, weapon is 345 and shield is 340). Is it safe to assume that my main / offhand are the likely culprit here (assuming minimal rotational flaws)?
Important.
Your weapons base damage is the modifier for all of your other abilities and holy power multipliers.
weapon damage gets multiplied by str
then that number gets multiplied by holy power modifiers depending on the ability you use.
and then mastery adjusts THAT number.
What it boils down to is that the weapons base damage directly affects how much all the math winds up hurting your target at the end. the higher the input, the more exponential the output. increasing your weapon's base damage by 5dps is the difference between a 10k avenger shield crit or a 12k crit
*disclaimer* I am spitballing figures arbitrarily to make a more lucid example, not an accurate one. I do not know if thats exactly how the math breaks down but its roughly as I understand it and have noticed the results to be.

Thanks, Hesselhoff. Guess now I cross my fingers for some luck today!
I've had no issues with threat with a 340 tanking +9's

Almost all your gear is 370+ and you still have a 340 weapon? This isn't helping my confidence!
0 threat issues from the very start, BUT I had a 370 weapon from that first weekend event of doing four mythics. So I would lean toward having a high item level weapon greatly helps with threat, but as always the biggest thing that helps with controlling threat is having DPS give you a chance before they unload.

mained ret until recently when I've become bored, etc. and started playing all three specs.
still use ret loot for most bosses and runs despite running the content as heals/tank.
Allies will mobilize their war effort in Arathi today.
Participate in that and you should get a 340 in no time, unless you get super lucky and get a 370 weapon from the weekly

I have a 340 already, looking to get a 360-370. :) In the meantime, farming Atal'Dazar. No luck thus far.
A cheat way to get a wep is the first 500 conquest in pvp if you can stomach it.
