I’m playing on Grob, and having fun so far. I’ve gotten this priest to lvl 23. I chose Forsaken specifically for their priest unique skills, as that seemed like a pretty big difference, and the only two options were forsaken or trolls.
I’m asking how important races are for the race specific skills. I plan on making other toons to try out other classes. The thing is, I USUALLY perfer to play as my favorite races, when the class is available to them. In the case of the Horde this would by Tauren, who I absolutly love. They can be warriors, hunters, shaman, and druids, the last of which is not a concern seeing as they are the only race that can select that class.
My worry is class guides I’ve been reading online make it sound like Orcs and Forsaken are THE pvp race, Trolls are better at some pve situations, and raiding depending on class, and tauren are either just below them or very, with no real benafit.
I don’t plan on doing more raiding than I need to for gear, never been that into it. I am very interested in pvp and wpvp though. If I pick tauren for any of their available classes, will I be putting myself at a severe disadvantage?
We could argue BIS or min max all day. My opinion would be to pick the race and class combination you like best. Vanilla has a lot of quirky items that will be able to make up the shortcomings of whatever you like. Between engineering, living action potions, the different trinkets you get (like ones that immune you to fear for a limited time) can bridge the gap that you may experience based off class/race. Each race brings something different to the table and are all useful to some extent.
For priests, it’s actually pretty significant. Trolls sadly get pretty unremarkable abilities (damage reduction debuff and a lightning shield clone) where undead get a DoT that heals the caster.
Where it really matters is alliance, as dwarf priests get fear ward and a huge panic heal. Horde priest racials are more PVP/Solo oriented.
Some of the racial bonuses give added dynamic for the classes available to that race, but ultimately the only thing that’s going to keep you playing is if you play a race that appeals to you.
It’s like martial arts in that people can argue all day long about which is best in which scenario, etc etc etc. At the end of the day, you have to practice what you enjoy or you won’t be bothered to show up for class.
Orcs get a passive stun resist, I think 25%, which is awesome in pvp. Undead get WotF which is also really good in pvp against fear classes. I am a tauren and I use warstomp all the time, I love it. If I where to play a warlock I would go orc for the stun resist against rogues, but I think its more important to play what you find enjoyable than to worry about the slight advantage a racial will give you.
Funny thing, of the base Allience races, dwarves are actually my favorites. I already have some Allience alt dwarves ready on the other rppvp server when I feel like checking out the Allience side. =p
Not as much as people here would have you believe. Especially, on Horde side you can make a good argument for most of the options. I might worry more about it Alliance side.
edit - and in regards to the comment about horde priests I would say berserk and shadowguard plus the stun talent are underrated. Again, on allies side it is much harder to not pick dwarf because stoneform and fear ward are so much better.
my own experience is that i race change to dwarf and panada before and after the race change, i find myself really do not like them and i stop playing them.
i think maybe you make a new char and see if you like the race before commiting full time.
From what a lot of you have said, yeah, it may be best to go with what I like over meta concerns. From my experience in any mmo I’ve played if I don’t like the feel of my them. I can’t stick to them I can think they’re really cool and still not like it. For example in retail I always loved the way male orcs looked, but no matter how much I tried to play them I could never stick to them. When your behind the wheel it’s just “different” and I get more picky.
I had the same issue in FF14 when I played that. I should most likely go with my gut instead of risk losing my intrest in the game because I don’t play what i like.
On PVP servers pretty significant at this patch level. Undead and goblins get a straight OP AF ability that breaks roots/stuns. On a separate cooldown as trinkets and other abilities of this nature.
As a counter-argument to what Hachimachi said – Hex of Weakness gives Troll Priests an edge in PVP over other Priests and Paladins (because it’s a Curse).
Shadowguard isn’t useful for the damage, but for use in conjunction with 5/5 Blackout. The stun is unreliable, but very nice when a Rogue is wailing on you and gets stunned during the opener.
5% spirit is ultimately the blowing of the wind (also known as blustering) too. You only get your spirit regeneration when you haven’t been casting for 5 seconds, which is not often until you have the content on farm, and 5% of a number that caps out around 300 in classic is 15. Which is about equivalent to a food buff. So a priest that doesn’t use food is about as less useless as a human one. Versus an ability, which while situational, prevent wipes. Or in reason, if you prefer.
