How important is lore/story to an MMO?

One of the many topics I see posted on GD is complaints about how Blizzard has handled the game’s story. And it got me wondering how important that is to WoW as a game.

It seems to be divided into two aspects - the lore/story and the gameplay, and those aspects are often quite separate. There is no real story in content that consists of “go kill X or go do y and return for reward”. Likewise there’s no content involved in being told the story of game, which is often done either in cutscenes, cinematics or even in outside sources such as novels and reference books.

We are offered quests with a small amount of information attached but how many of us just grab the quest and close it down without really bothering to read it? And while some other games have been lauded for how much storytelling they contain, I also wonder how often some people get a bit tired of being forcefed story when all they want to do is actually play. So my question probably is - how important is the story behind the game, especially relating to playing the game itself.

And sure, you can try for both but lets just assume for the moment that its an actual philosophical question. Does a logical, detailed and indepth story improve the actual gameplay? Is some degree of immersion in the game’s story important to give the content more depth? And if WoW did have more of that, more immersive story that required you to listen to NPCs as they told you of events, would you take it in or just skip on buy to get that reward?

Me personally, I think that if its handled right, it certainly does improve the gaming experience. I recall playing in Wrath and the thing that has stuck with me through all those years is how I wanted to learn more about the story of WoW, how Arthas figured in it, how he got to where he was, etc. And there was no real hidden agenda in that expansion’s story, no things to figure out - just work through the content and get to the end to face him, defeat him and bring the expansion to a satisfying conclusion.

Again, imo, WoW should not be treated like a novel. We shouldn’t be fed titbits little by little; we should know our ultimate enemy, should know the whys and wherefores and have a clear story path ahead of us leading to that ultimate showdown. Why Blizzard’s writers feel the need to drip feed us the story like they are now is beyond me. I would say to them, learn from the good and the bad, and rethink what you are doing. Because what you are doing isnt working out very well.

Ever since I discovered QuestHelper in either lateBC or early wrath I never read another quest.

FFXIV (I’m told)

My one friend that I know that plays it does  She says all the dialog puts her to sleep.

If Blizz forced storytelling like unskippable cinematics I’d just alt tab and do something else until it was over :man_shrugging: I’ve been rewatching Punisher on Netflix so probably watch that instead.

I have no interest in the story of any game, it’s not just me hating Wows story I just don’t care about game story.

I’ve never thought much of WoW’s story, and I’ve been around since the start. So to me, it’s not important. Obviously everyone is different.

I think thats true for a lot of people, especially if you are replaying parts of a game on an alt. You’ve probably got quite familiar with the story and what is happening and dont need to have it tossed at you again.

I guess Im sort of half and half. I like the option of being able to skip stuff, but I also like the background story to be good so that it feels more fun to be a part of it.

its important to me but idc anymore. void elves, sylvanas since bfa, all trash

Some people will say to toss the story if it makes for better game play, but I have stuck around in games solely based on the story being good and my investment in characters.

I think story and lore open the way for a good game. Develop the lore, use it to write the game. Blizzard used to be pretty good at it but now we have this mess where most of the story isn’t in the game at all.

very important. we need a reason to be in the world, we cant just be killing 5000 boars because there is nothing else to do.

The world should feel alive. Not just populated with monsters and nodes of loot. It needs some NPCs scattered around. Some good. Some bad. A little wit doesn’t hurt either. The real world isn’t always serious. Game worlds shouldn’t be either.

Modern game designers have lost sight of the fact they’re making something that’s supposed to be fun.

I think it’s extremely important. Without the story there’d be no real world to the game. No meaningful characters, no developments. It guides us the whole way. Why are we going to these new lands and zones? Who are these bosses filling up the raids and dungeons? Why are quests telling us to do these things?

If you take away the story WoW is aimless soulless nothing. Which for a game like this is very bad. The world building matters greatly.

Personally I really like the lore and I do read/watch everything. Don’t really have trouble following what goes on. WoW has a cool world. But as with all stories it can be very subjective. Some like it, others hate it. To some people it’s very important and others couldn’t care less. Neither is wrong. Tis just how it is, won’t appeal to everyone.

I read the quests the first time. Story is important to me. All my characters have their own. It would be a boring game without it.

It depends on the type of MMO. Considering WoW still markets itself as a MMORPG so story should be very important. The entire aspect of role playing is story based. You could possibly say if they changed it to being an MMOG it would be more understanding if they put just a bare bones story in.

It’s ok
If consistent and not all over the place
I think most games need a story in some way or another an end goal something to work towards even Mario was trying to save the princess in Mario brothers and donkey Kong
So you felt like you weren’t just on a hampster wheel
But I have used addons like guidelime that auto accepts quests and autoflys me to flight paths
After you do the quests enough times the story is meh
And new xpac lead to more character development if the writing isn’t lazy I can behind a good story , Warcraft is all over the place but a story is important in my opinion

I would say it’s moderately important for me in a MMO. If the gameplay was top notch and the story was still a dumpster fire, I would pretty much remain subbed at all times anyway because of the gameplay(rather than only playing periodically to check out new content, or just playing Classic instead).

but a better story would make it more enjoyable.

I think WoW has always had pretty good execution of its story, even if the quality of the actual writing isn’t always good. Most of the time it’s not really forced. It’s there if you want to read the quest text, pay attention to dialogue, or watch the cutscenes, but outside of a few specific cases you aren’t typically forced to do it.

Also it’s not something Classic could ever reproduce but I loved the mystery of the world in Vanilla and speculating with people about what a set piece like the Caverns of Time was going to be, or what was going on in the zones we couldn’t yet get to.

I feel like a lot of that has been lost, even though we’re getting new lore.

I think it varies by person.

I kinda get my story fix from another MMO so in WoW I just look for gameplay.

I think quests in MMORPGs are important, to me at least, for the immersion factor. When it comes to storytelling FFXIV, FFXI, SWTOR, GW, GW2 and ESO all do really great. Not perfect but have been my favorites over the past 20 years of playing MMORPGs

WoW lost me after cata released when the unsubtle pop culture references and overly silly quest lines (which is fine, but is overdone.) took over. Really broke the immersion for me. Everywhere you turn is an easter egg etc. They used to do really well balancing this out. Now not so much.

I really feel like with Warcraft as I look at the big picture as an adult… it was never that great. I was young.

It used to be very important.
But since It became such trash, and confusing, I’ve become dismissive and not paid attention to the lore anymore.
As soon as they had to go “back in time” to a different timeline to fix plotholes, i consider that a very lazy shortcut. Not to mention to grasp 70% of the story, you have to buy a freaking novel. Wtf? No wonder new players aren’t coming to the game. It’s too confusing. And every single expac has been trying to convince you that you’re some sort of demi God savior here to save the universe.
Gets old, very fast.
I’m the chosen one.
Along with the other million and a half players lmao.
The art team has been carrying blizz and making up for the other departments failures for far too long.

Extremely for some of us. Especially because I’m a roleplayer. This is an MMORPG not just an MMO. So yes, I think it’s very important. Three of my guilds died because of how bad the lore is now.

Lore should give us a reason why we are where we are and why we are using our abilities to kill random boar #999,859,435,398,125

If it is all about game play alone it is no longer a mmorpg but a mmo action shooter and they may as well rename the game World of Diablo or World of CoD or World of Fortnite.

Lore/story is extremely important to any MMORPG as it gives background and framing for the character’s role and actions in the World.

Very. For the same reason as above.

Lore/story and gameplay are interconnected. The lore/story is why you are doing something while the gameplay is how you are doing it.

What?

Til Death Do Us Part quest disproves this idea. So does the Pamela Redpath questline. And a hundred other small stories.

Lore/story supports, frames and ‘colours in’ the content.

Knowing why the characters is taking an action increases immersion in the World, the role the characters is playing and the interactions with NPCs.

Gameplay first, story second.

I have ZERO reason to care about a story if the gameplay sucks.
