How important are the skills?

Noticed while leveling id passively gain skills. Like Defense has increased by 1. Swords have increased by one

Do dungeons or raids require a certain amount?

You want defense as high as you can for your level. It reduces your chance to be hit or critically hit.

Weapon skills only matter if you use that particular weapon.

“Require?” No.
Highly recommended if you ever want to succeed in a raid? Yes. Max them out.

Low skill means you have a low chance to hit, or in the case of defense, a high chance to be crit or worse. You want it maxed - and you will have it maxed. Even if you’re a caster/healer primarily, you should always level your skills. It comes in handy - even a Priest has a reason to bap things with their staff now and again.

Wands are the way to go for priests. Wand spec ftw.

Wand and melee are on different timers, so you can wand, auto attack, then wand again. It’s bonus damage if done right.

Same with Hunters. You do a lot more damage (and actually benefit from Windfury) if you dodge in and out of melee for a Raptor Strike between auto shots while Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot are cooling down.

Although this was TBC… I distinctly remember tanks needing to grind out their dagger skill for Kael’thas.

Was pretty funny at the time. Though not for the tanks.

So weapons skills are important.

I’m fairly sure one of the best tanking weapons for pure threat is Felstriker, which is a dagger.

So as a prot warrior. Attacking mobs with a sword raise sword skill passively? Is there a way to check how close you are to next skill lvl up?

And for def i just let mobs hit me?

Depends if you want to hit anything at max level or not.

No, not really. It’s basically you have a chance to level it each time you hit with it or take a hit. Increased intellect provides a higher chance to it, so you could level it faster by wearing Intellect gear - if you wanted. At least that’s how I remember it.

For defense, you let mobs hit you until it caps (it’s capped at 5x your level, so the cap is 300). You also get +defense gear, which brings you closer to being uncrittable by the boss, which means your health doesn’t drop more spiky if they randomly crit you. You can find it on various pieces of gear and only the tank wants these pieces as only the tank should be taking melee hits.

Some races have +weapon skill, like humans with swords and maces. Increasing your weapon skill reduces the chance of a glancing blow (does less damage).

Is it a bar you can fill in? If yes, go to next question.
Is it filled in? If no, go to next question.
Are you filling it in? If no, go to next question.
WHY THE HECK NOT?!?!

Fill in all the things. Getting to 60 and getting that epic just to see
Miss… miss… swords 2… miss… swords 3… or even worse that you don’t have the skill to equip it SUCKS!

IIRC Weapon skill was the predecessor of expertise or something.

I wouldn’t worry to much about the skills. Defense will passively go up as you level by being hit. It’ll max out pretty much organically. Weapon skills you can max out in short time. You should max those skills before entering a raid or trying to pvp with a new weapon type, but it’s not particularly hard.

Thanks for the help friend!

This pretty much. Always max out a weapon skill before doing at level or higher content if you’re switching to a new weapon type.

Back in my day there was this place in Blasted Lands, it was like Westworld, they never died, brains and livers, but no fava beans, oh, and this dragon that would patrol around and scare the daylights out of a fool! Yep, mmm, hmm, them were the days of our lives, don’t make 'em like that anymore.

IIRC, you also need to purchase the base weapon skills from specific weapon trainers for every weapon your class can equip, except for the one you start out with. Without the base weapon skill, you won’t even be able to equip a new type of weapon, let alone skill it up.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I distinctly remember hauling my butt to all the major cities to purchase all my weapon skills.

You will need to wand for mana when the pally judges wisdom on the boss.
