I think most of us can agree that depletes suck; I know it’s why I hardly ever risk my own key outside of guildies. I think they need to go away but I also think there needs some system in it’s place to limit what would otherwise just turn M+ into huge insane first pulls and just going again until it goes well.
My suggestion, keys have charges with a 6-12 hour recharge. No more depletes even for missed timers, leavers don’t kill your key you just run it again (still a problem of wasting your time but that’s inevitable when dealing with randoms on the internet), and the top end doesn’t feel forced into trying insanely risky pulls because they only get so many attempts a week (yes they will still try them but not at the rate we see in competitions).
How it works is you start the week with your 20 Freehold at max charges (let’s use 3 charges for an example), slap a group together and put your key in; it is now a 20 FH 2/3 and the recharge begins. That group falls apart so you try again with a new group and your same 20 FH key that currently has 2/3 charges; put it in and it’s now 1/3. That group also falls apart but you’ve still got your same 20 FB at 1/3. Let’s say you run that but that group also falls apart so you now have your 20 FH key with 0/3 charges.
Next day you’ve gotten a charge back and you run that 20 FH again but missed that timer so you now have a 20 key of a new random dungeon (current system just without the deplete) and it’s back to 3/3 charges. The same thing for end of dungeon key rerolls can happen where all new keys start with max charges again.
We’ve gotta do something to end depletes outside of the current weekly key decay and make leavers less punishing. I don’t think losing rating is much of a punishment and probably overly restrictive on the top end who voluntarily abandons keys all the time.
So then how would you derank your key? Your system makes that impossible to do outside the weekly decay. And that brings us to why key depleting was a thing to begin with. Say player x key goes to 27 from getting a plus 2 from a 25 but are incapable of doing a 27. Well now with your system they have no key to complete for 2 weeks where as they could just derank back to a 25.
have the keys reroll them selves each day to a lvl same as or higher than what came in the vault.
The NPC in Valdrakken does this for you right now.

Deranking keys is an outdated mechanic. Originally they were depleted and you’d get no loot at the end, but you could run it again at the same level to upgrade it. The only thing deranking does is make people extremely careful with their 20s.
When people list keys, they have the option of “beat timer, standard, or completion” - I’m lost as to what standard is supposed to mean?
I get why people leave if you list a key as ‘beat timer’ and it becomes obvious that isn’t going to happen. I support this in fact, because as the keyholder you set an expectation that the group could not meet, I don’t support penalizing the people who left over it.
If you list a key as “completion,” I think it’s reasonable to expect people to finish it. But at the same time, it woudlnt be fair to keep someone “hostage” in the key either–especially if a key is above a 10 and people are making dumb mistakes. I really don’t want to hear people’s defenses on this either. Having an off day? Don’t do a key that day then.
If you are playing keys even above level 10, I expect you to still interupt/stun, do DECENT dps for your item level, not stand in bad AND not back so far up that you pull other stuff. 1 or 2 of these is fine, but if it becomes a meme, I’m out. I don’t expect to get punished for it either, keys require you to be on your game…if you’re going to pug, you should AT LEAST be on it.
It sounds like you could just throw the key three times to get a new fully charged key for a different dungeon. Almost as if you could just repeat that until you get the key you want.
How would you prevent that?
