In light of the many threads created in relation to the back and forth concerning MoP CM sets, Mage Tower Artifacts, and the like, this got me thinking about the inherent feeling that one might get in a game like OSRS when seeing a player walk by with gear that one can instantly recognize as high level and requiring effort to attain.
This feeling died in WoW with adoption of Xmog (at least for players who stick around long enough to realize that the vast majority of armor in the game is trivial to attain). It’s probably safe to say that for the majority of the WoW playerbase, this is a good thing - most people are likely more concerned with simply playing a character, wearing armor that they cosmetically enjoy.
I’ve always enjoyed the pre-xmog, in your face, visual progression of characters, though in modern WoW, sporting the newest tier set just doesn’t hit the same within a sea of characters pulling out the most well designed sets from their closets.
I would never personally advocate for the removal of xmog because it suits the majority of people. Now, however, I protest in a different way. I give you…the clown mog.
The saying goes, Gear is temporary, Mog is forever. I concede and accept the notion. Prepare yourself to face the consequences. Bask in the eternal glory of the clown mog. It’s power is too great.
