How hard are "RP" servers to get into?

I know this is a kind of vague question, so let me expand a bit.

I was never really into RP’ing much growing up. Never really played any tabletop games or anything like that. However, a few years ago, a coworker got me into DnD and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nowadays I find myself in 3 weekly campaigns, and I may be starting a 4th as the DM.

My point is, I’ve just started getting into actual roleplaying within the past few years but besides DnD I have really no other things that I do. So I was looking at maybe rolling a character for TBC Classic on a RP server, but I just wanted to get some clarification on the exact nuances.

I know general terms like OOC and I know there are addons that you can use to implement backstories and stuff for your characters. But I’m confused on certain things, such as the speech patterns and stuff.

As an example, I do like to min-max, so for TBC I’d likely either be going Orc or Troll, depending on which has the better racials (I believe it’s orc since they have bloodfury and pet damage as opposed to just berserking but I’m not sure?). Anyways, let’s say I were to roll a troll. When I type things, am I expected to make them sound “troll-esque”?

I think my main concern is rolling a race that has a speech pattern that’s not necessarily human-like and messing up and “fail-rp’ing”.

I also don’t know basic etiquette of servers like these; any quick tips/hints? I’ve played a bit of DnD now so I know a bit about character creation and the traps that newer players usually tend to fall into. However, I guess I’m also afraid that while I do know a decent amount about WoW lore, I’m concerned about potentially making mistakes and ruining other peoples’ immersion.

Ultimately, I guess my rant comes down to: as someone who has created OC characters in the past for DnD but have never done it on WoW, is there any guide on creating a WoW character and how to RP specifically in WoW - and is there common things that I should avoid? At the end of the day I don’t want myself or my character to cause any friction for anyone or ruin anyone else’s character / immersion, so I’m trying to go with the lightest touch possible.

Thank you!

There’s a room in these forums called Worlds end tavern. It’s about Rp’in . Prolly get more response in there😊
And so glad you got into D&D!

A guildmate of mine wrote an etiquette guide.

As someone who has only ever dabbled in WoW RP…commit to it.

Make it a core part of your game experience, not an attachment. Even casually RP-ing can be a lot of fun.

I have played dnd since the early 80s boxed sets. When someone is new to dnd, I explain to them that dnd is like build a bear wkshop. You have your different parts and you have to find a way to attach them while telling how you are doing it. Add in some talk and what you would do if x y z happened and you have the basis for a story.

No worries, you are in safe hands! I have been told that gnomish hands are relatively childlike in appearance but let me assure you that they can make a mean spiced rum cake. Plenty of rum and a bit of mild spices. While you are at it, I recently came across an associate that has a supply of bloodbane wine. I heard that orcs really enjoy it. I GNO someone that GNOs when a fresh batch will come in.

You don’t have to talk like a troll. If you get the addon Total Roleplay 3 (yes, they have a version for classic), you can make one of your traits “talks with a troll accent” and let the other players use their imagination. lol.

I personally can’t stand when someone types with a heavy accent. It slows down RP when you are trying to read whatever it is they are trying to say.

I think the more you play and get used to RP, and see how others RP, you’ll get into the groove.
