Hi,
I was wondering if you all could shed some light on how good pvp rank 10 gear is for ret paladin in classic? Can you plz compare it also against gear obtained from certain dungeons and/or raids.
its pretty ok
As good as it gets, because that’s the only gear a Ret paladin is getting.
I can’t speak for the ret set specificially itemization wise…
but as a general rule the blue pvp set was roughly on par with BWL epics. Your biggest handicap will be a weapon, however… as TuF (or whatever the alliance equivalent was) was basically a bad MC level weapon and you’ll probably want better). Well, that and you are apparently planning on maining ret at a time when ret was a meme spec.
I have no xp in raiding in vanilla coz i started in oct 2006 but from reading forums and podcasts i gather ret is not invited to raids as much and not on firs t preference. Cheers
11-13 was bwl level
Rank 10 is as good as pre raid blues. It’s only benefit is that it looks exactly as rank 11-13 gear so combatants don’t know if you are in crappy blues or in epics.
I think the whole “Ret never gets invited to raids” is more of a joke at this point. Raiding in vanilla is too easy for everything up to Horsemen in Naxx. There’s definitely plenty of guilds that will take Rets, just not a few hard nosers worried about min maxing.
It is not a question of min/max.
Pallies just were horrible as DPS to the point they are below min, most of the time they were either healers or buffers.
But even if i got in raids as a ret prolly anyone also can, seal twisting and lots of strenght is what you want to PvE as ret in vanilla but if you are the top dps as ret your raid is really bad.
But tbh, tier 2 paladin, judgment set was awesome for shockadins.
Thanks, thats useful info. I understand that ret wasnt a great dps spec back then so im trying to get an understanding of what i can expect in terms of gearing thru pvp compared to gearing thru pve.
Take a look at the Spelladin thread, it’s a build that brings the Ret’s DPS to respectable levels. It’s farm intensive (relying on consumables and an on use weapon that is scrapped after three uses), but it does do good damage. It’s also only really been tested on private servers so if it’s going to work in Classic is up in the air.
A new ret spec is being tested out right now that, so far, seems to do fairly decent dps. Of course you can’t expect it to do as much dps as a pure but that’s what you get with vanilla. Even if you go traditional ret, it’ll do enough to meet the bare minimum raid dps as the raid dps needed in vanilla was pathetically low.
Of course you’ll meet the elitists who will be so prejudiced against rets that they won’t bring them but you’ll run into that no matter what spec you choose. You’ll find people who won’t want to bring anymore mages because there’s too many clothies competing got gear, too many warriors/rogues competing for the leather gear, etc etc.
Play what you want. You’ll never please everyone, just play what you enjoy and try to do it good enough that you impress those that are on the fence.
Yeah gearing through PvP is a great idea (diminishing raid loot bottleneck, etc.) and it’ll be pretty easy for ya since Rets absolutely slay in BGs.
This. To many Ret pallies try to gear like a warrior, just sticking str. The fact is that you have magic and should be using it. Tier 2 is amazing, and reflects the one moment Blizzard intelligently designed Paladin gear during Vanilla. The tier 1 and tier 3 sets would have been much better if they had the same stat allocation.
The gear is good but the only thing you’re going to good for is cleansing buffing and healing
Ya but there is none avaiable beyond pvp gear and judgment set. Unless you roll for clothies dps items lol.
I had a friend that had several cloth with +damage, spell damage trinket and almost all judgment set, he could literally kill people with a few hits comboed with a holy shock+divine favor.
Well, they just didn’t want the cool Retadins wearing ugly power rangers armour.

The gear is good but the only thing you’re going to good for is cleansing buffing and healing
Not really. Spelladin can do good damage (if it’s viable on Classic), and in PvP Ret is actually good.
Not really though
I mean… yeah? In 1v1 they’re strong with CDs, in group PvP they have a lot of supportive utility and good damage. They’re not holy paladin tier but they’re not completely worthless like people make them out to be.
Keep in mind a lot of Rets in the old days geared like warriors… and that’s why they sucked as hard as they did.
