How feasible is a rogue in the current iteration of TBC Classic? I know everyone says just play what you like, but when I was playing TBC before (Phase 1) rogues were almost universally shunned from groups.
Are they in a better spot? As a level 58 rogue entering TBC, would it be an enjoyable experience gearing out or would I be better off playing another class?
rogue is a worse fury warrior that brings less to the raid group.
You do less aoe for trash that is a key part as trash makes up the largest % of your night to night clear times.
Your ST is only comparable to fury assuming equal gear and glaives dosent help that as warriors also want them and get as much if not more value from them. Thou yes warriors replace them in sunwell this in fact makes the issue worse as means warriors cont to get better weps rogues dont.
Rogues bring IEA yes which can be good but honestly speaking is not that big and many raid groups just dont bother with it as another fury means 2x in one group arms in other for Battle shout in both groups with commanding in one to boost your better melees survival rate which is nice while boosting your tank druids hp by a vary significant amount which is quite big in sunwell to give a example on brutalus comparing the “best” pre sunwell brut set with and without commanding within the sims heal setup your death odds drop from 8.6% to 3.6% so 5% higher odds to live a massive change that is more than a rogues IEA will ever do for prog. IEA is a parse more tool in this day and age where dps is so much higher than needed that increased tank survival esp into sunwel and the hard raids is just better. While yes after prog having a rogue is nice for parsing IEA is only worth vs that warrior if that rogue is pumping meaning parsing higher than that same warrior but rogue honestly speaking your less likly to parse high as its more difficult to parse high while maintaining that perfect IEA uptime and your likly to be picked as the melee that gets the short stick expected to int or do the unwanted job as otherwise why take a rogue over a fury. While you will be expected to pull those numbers while in the less optimal melee group norm with arms survival ehn feral if 2 druid prot tanking 3rd fury if fury prot druid tanking.
Without IEA the warriors each hit sunder at the start if 3 warriors that means each fury 2x arms 1x + demo. Than arms maintains. Worse fury maintains demo. Sunder is worse than IEA but not by that much vs the value of commanding on a melee group + tank. While that fury you picked up can even fill the third tank role something the rogue you got cant while having commanding + battle to do so via the double fury making a offspec tank feel that much better.
So honestly speaking unless you are a rogue in a guild that you have been in and raiding since the start of tbc the odds to get a raid spot is next to nill. A guild that lost there rogue would be recruiting a warrior to replace as not only is it easier to find a good warrior as good rogues norm have been in a guild since start of tbc as there not likly to leave knowing there not likly to get another raid spot. Warriors on the other hand there are many of them and easy to learn. So its easy to get a new warrior and even if you have to make a “newb” warrior parse in the upper 80s with just a little training. We just did that recently picked up a 40-50% parse warrior 2 weeks later hes constantly in the 80-90% parse.
While as a rogue you got 0-1 raid spots in a norm raid team. Warrior you have 2-5 (norm 3-4 based on tank setup) between prot 0-1 arms 1 and fury 1-3. So you have significantly higher odds for a raid spot esp if you dont mind what you play and even more so if you dont mind tanking 10 mans on offnights as can be done as fury OR arms ideally fury and making you quite wanted.
Nothing changed since phase1, things actually gone worse in term of grouping.
-for leveling in outland you’ll have to quest meanwhile you might find a group to do dungeons if you’re lucky.
-for pve, it depend but it’s super rare fora fresh lvl70 rogue to find a guild that need a rogue unless it’s New guild aiming to start raiding from T4 , and there is no way to ever find any raid pug that invites fresh 70 rogues to anywhere, same for Heroics no one will take you for them unless you have tank/healer friend, the only option is to find a way to get massive amounts of gold so you can join Gdkp’s and buy items.
-for pvp if you wants to enjoy arena then you’ll have to join Random bg’s forever in-order to get gear, at least Bg’s are fun for a rogue.
jf you were a healer or warlock you could easily gear up even if you’re fresh lvl70 but anyway being a rogue doesn’t mean you have dead end! since wotlk is coming in like 5~6months and Rogues will be great in there! so you might find a guild that is forming now for wotlk.
If your goal is to raid in tbc its probably at its worst for rogues. Not only are they still generally the most undesired class but there are an enormous number of them and thanks to glaives the rogue spot in BT GDKPs is almost always taken by someone who prebid glaives at incredibly high prices.
Lower tier content is mostly alright and pvp is still incredible as rogue if you’re ok with mostly sticking to that. As others have said rogue is also great in WotLK so if you want to just prepare you can play casually, level up, and get some basic gear in preparation for leveling.
In late stage TBC, Rogues actually really begin to shine. There are a handful of really hardcore meta players on private realms who say that Rogues have some of the highest, if not the highest DPS potential in the game once they have the gear to pull it off.
That being said, you’ll probably have trouble finding a guild where you can get the gear needed to hit that level because there are already so many people out there who have filled that spot.
I know it’s not what you want to hear, but I think “play what you want” makes even more sense now than ever. The further into the content we get, the less the meta play matters when you’re behind the curve. There will be plenty of guilds who will take you, depending on the server you’re on. Just don’t expect to have a spot in a guild that takes the meta very seriously this late.
Well, yeah in tbc classic I think you need 1 rogue to bring improved sunder armor which is about 3k armor pen vs 5 sunders bringing 2.5k armor pen. They are in a better spot but I wouldn’t count of free glaives until wrath classic. As well humans make the best sword rogues.
That depends on who you’re playing with and what your goals are. If you want to play with people like:
Then pick something else.
If players like that drive you nuts and you don’t want anything to do with them, roll whatever and have fun! There are plenty of guilds who’ll take reliable and friendly players, regardless of class/spec. Rogues will always have a top spot in PvP. In a several months, we’ll see them get a nice boost in PvP, too.
Now that we have armor penetration on gear I would argue that having Improved Expose Armor is one of the most important boss debuffs for any raid team that uses physical dps. But most guilds already have one very dedicated rogue player per 25 man team, so I wouldn’t hold my breath trying to get started as a fresh rogue.
