How does The Catalyst in Dornogal work with color variants?

I’m trying to collect the Normal difficulty colors for my tier set without having to deal with Pre-made Groups, there’s only so many times I can waste hours sitting in a group of people who wipe instantly and still have a chance not to get what I want.

Does what color you get depend on the actual ilvl itself or the category the item is in (Adv, Vet, Champ, Hero)

If I catalyze something that is “Champion” tier but it’s in Normal raid ilvl territory will I get the Normal colors and then heroic as I upgrade into those levels or will I just get Heroic?

So what’s the metric, ilvl or teir?

It’s based on the ilvl of the item. In Dragonflight, veteran gear gave the LFR appearance by default and normal if upgraded past the base threshold of normal gear drops. An easier way to remember is it’s always rank 5 on each upgrade track to get the appearance from the higher tier. Champion would give normal and heroic once upgraded similarly, and heroic could give mythic. So if you want the normal appearance, upgrade the veteran piece to 597. Or upgrade a champ item to 610 for heroic, or heroic item to 623 for mythic. Just be sure to catalyze before upgrading if you want both appearances.

Normal will be very easy as the season progresses, though. Heroic is usually the pug wipefest, especially near the end of the season. You can also typically convert several open world items or those obtained in mythic/mythic+ dungeons and from the vault to have a higher chance at getting pieces you want without relying on the raid drops.
