How does realm work?

Can someone kindly explain to me how the realm (server) works? I’m on Daggerspine and I constantly see and play with people over different servers. In what way will my realm affect the gameplay? Pvp? mythic? raiding? I kinda think it should have an impact on the gameplay (though I don’t know what it is) as there’s a charged service to transfer realms. So in general, how does it work? Thank you!

The most important facets of individual servers are guilds and the auction house.

You cannot trade any item that’s not Conjured cross-realm, nor can you join a “foreign” guild. You can join communities, but not guilds.

CRZ is what we call it when you interact with people from other servers in the world. Cross-realm zoning. It’s just there to make the world feel more alive.

For mythic raiding specifically, your server doesn’t matter at this point in a tier, only in the very beginning.

To my limited understanding, the main thing it affects is guilds and the auction house. AH is not cross server. And you can’t join a guild on a different server. (Which doesn’t make sense to me since you can see and interact with and group with people from different servers).

you sort of can though for merged realms
it will be your name - server as your ID in the guild roster
which is why CRZ guilds may as well replace “communities”

While everyone else goes about explaining Cross Realm Servers and such… I’ll just explain what is your server.

Daggerspine was a PVP server long ago before they removed them for a toggled into world instance called Warmode. Back in those days, PVP servers were losing population fast as numbers grew more and more out of hand. Turns out everyone was tired of someone flying over, seeing them trying to quest… one shotting them and then flying off. Who knew!

So blizzard’s first attempt at fixing the population issues for PVP servers was to combine multiple other pvp servers (most pve servers are only combined with one other server), the most extreme cases have five.

Daggerspine is combined with Aegwynn, Bonechewer, Gurubashi, and Hakkar. These five are all classified as your server. You can trade with them, you share an economy on the Auction House and you can join each others guilds.

If you see someone outside of these five servers, they are Cross Realm Zoned into you (or you into them). Your CRZ servers tend to stay the same as well. For example, I always see Hydraxis and Terenas even though Winterhoof (my server) is only combined into Kilrogg. I can’t trade with those other two servers even though I see them all the time and it’s pretty freaking frustrating if I’m honest.

In Shadowlands, we’ll get more combined servers, likely for us PVE ones who still only have two, though no official words on who is going to be combined with whom yet.
