How does PvP work now? (Servers)

Hey, so I haven’t played WoW in 2 years, but I want to get back into it for Arena. Anyway, I heard that you can play ranked Arena cross faction and cross server? Is that true? I can group with an orc as a human for Arena? If that’s the case, then I think I’ll be making some Horde alts, too.

Also, does it not matter what server I’m in for World PvP? Like, if I’m on a 90%+ Alliance server, that will be fine if I’m in War Mode, right? I don’t know if I’m remembering correctly, but I think I get to fight people in War Mode from other servers out in the world, so it doesn’t matter if my server’s mostly Alliance anymore, right?

Bonus question–can I mail gold to Horde alts on the same server now, too?

Yes!!

And… I posted this in another thread-- just pasting it here:

1> There are no more PvP SERVERS. All servers are all the same now.

2> When you enter the game world, you now have to think of it like entering an Instance. If YOU enter SFO … and then I enter SFO … we won’t be placed in the same instance, right? You understand how Instances work, yes?

The “normal” game world is now broken into “Shards.” You can think of these like Instances that the game handles dynamically.

You enter the world and get assigned to a “Shard” with WM-Off. There might only be 1 active Shard, there might be many. You have NO CONTROL over which Shard you get put in.

In the “WM-Off Shard”, you can still toggle PvP on. This puts you in a PvP … but still in a WM-Off Shard. You will likely see almost NO ONE flagged for PvP, because this is NOT the same as WM-On.

So you turn off the flag for PvP. You’re still in the WM-Off Shard, and now back to normal play.

Now turn WM-On. This can only be done in Org/SW.

The game now puts you in a DIFFERENT SHARD (different Instance). The new shard is for WM-On players ONLY. Note you’re still on the same server you have always been on, but now everyone you see will be flagged for PvP. Please don’t complain about anything, if you’re having a bad time, JUST TURN IT OFF. You can turn it off in ANY Rested-Area.

Switching back to WM-Off will put you BACK into a “WM-Off Shard” … and you can now play however you like.

Sweet, thanks! And there is absolutely no way to send gold to your alts on other servers, right? I tested it, but it wasn’t happening. I do vaguely remember there’s a way, though?

Only way I know of is to buy guild banners … I think it was? There was some odd way to buy guild items and those you could mail cross-server. But you lost money doing this and the exchange rate SUCKED.

It was basically something you did to buy a 500g item on a special occasion. It wasn’t something you did to move 2M to an alt “for real.”

Ah gotcha, ok! Thanks a lot for the help!

Only ways to get gold onto servers not connected to the one that has you gold characters is

(a) By use of account wide items like battle pets.
(b) By transferring a character with gold on them, up to whatever the transfer limit is.
(c) By doing a bit of a shuffle with your bnet balance, using it on your poor character to buy a token for cash so it is put on the AH so you earn gold when it sells, and then repay yourself by having your rich toon put gold onto your bnet account or use it to buy a months sub. So you basically even out financially. (I think I got that right, I may need coffee.)
